Bronzed Air Jordans by Matthew Senna

Bronzed Air Jordans by Matthew Senna

Parents are known to have their child’s baby shoes bronzed as a familial keepsake, and Los Angeles-based artist and designer Matthew Senna is applying that time-worn concept on a much wider scale, transforming a duo of Air Jordan models into gleaming cultural artifacts. The two silhouettes in question are the Air Jordan 3 and Air Jordan 13 — dubbed Study 003 and Study 013, respectively — with the former billed as a “design that changed the future of a culture,” while the latter “captures the end of an era.” They’re up for sale through Senna’s site, with each carrying a ,250 price tag.

BRONX NEWS: Bronx rappers create Ebola-related song to calm fears about disease

An ill beat  might help the world combat Ebola.

That’s the idea behind a Bronx rap group’s new song aimed at moving the nation to do something about the deadly disease.

“Chant ‘We don’t want to die, we don’t want to die,’ ‘cause we’ll lose this battle if we turn a blind eye,” The Ground Breakers, an old-school Bronx hip-hop group, raps in the track temporarily titled “We Don’t Want to Die.”

The rappers — Kut King, Rodney Stone, MC Happy and T-SKI Valley — will debut the infectious tune Thursday at a Harlem town hall meant to quell concerns about the virus.

“Ebola is the topic of the conversation,” raps Stone in the first verse. “Saving lives is our final destination.”

A stop en route there is to fight unfair pegging of Americans with West African heritage as infected with Ebola.

The performance comes days after two middle school kids from Senegal say they were pummeled at a Bronx school by bullies chanting, “You’re Ebola!”

The disease can only be spread through direct contact with blood or body fluids of someone infected, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

And just two cases have been reported in the United States.

“It only gets worse if you think it’s a curse,” raps T-Ski Valley in the track’s third verse.

The song is scant on specific instructions on how to avoid contracting Ebola or how quarantines work.

But the hip-hop pioneers say they’ll update the song with more information as their campaign continues.

Organizers say the tune is more about uniting people against the disease.

“It’s kind of like the song ‘We are the World,’ but for Ebola,” said Felix Sarpong, an active member of the Bronx Ghanaian community who recruited the rappers.

Bronze Air Jordan 3 by Matt Senna

Where do we start? The Bronze Air Jordan 3 by Matt Senna is everything it says it is and more, adding weight to one of the heaviest sneakers in the game. While art can be interpreted in any which way, The Hundreds spoke with Matt about this piece. Here’s what he had to say:

“I have a tendency to create art that isn’t entirely obvious in its intention whether it be positive or negative. As a result, I’ll get two people with entirely opposite interpretations of a piece, and to me, that means for one person it sparked one emotion and the other it sparked the opposite, but it made them both think, and that’s my only intention, to make people think for themselves.

Growing up, I was a big Jordan head and the brand honestly changed my life, not only by inspiring me athletically but by teaching me about brand development. I literally studied the brand and the moves they made, so to me these may mean one thing, but that not the reason I made them. I made these because I think there is an interesting contrast in whether they’re are paying homage to the history of these iconic shoes by freezing them in time, or if it’s an exploitation of the culture and statement about the pedestals we place these brands and materialistic items on by creating these sculptures of them.”

Check out the Bronze Air Jordan 3 by Matt Senna in the photos below. Keep up with Matt’s work on his personal site.
