BRONX NEWS: Carl Heastie sees increased support in bid to replace Silver

ALBANY — Assembly Majority Leader Joseph Morelle said Thursday that candidates vying for the speakership should let the public know if they are under investigation, as support solidified around the Bronx’s Carl Heastie as Sheldon Silver’s likely replacement.

“Why wouldn’t it be an appropriate question for a member who seeks to be the leader of the house, especially in an institution where you have a fair amount of influence and power?” said Morelle to the Daily News Editorial Board.

The Rochester Democrat, Heastie of the Bronx and Catherine Nolan of Queens are the remaining candidates to replace Silver, who will vacate the speaker’s office Monday.

All three told The News they are not under investigation. Heastie was named by the Moreland panel for having ,000 in unitemized campaign expenses.

Morelle was in New York hoping to drum up support for his uphill speakership bid. During his meeting with The News, he revealed he has spoken about his candidacy with Gov. Cuomo, with whom he has a close relationship.

Still, Heastie’s momentum continued to build Thursday.

Assemblyman Joseph Lentol of Brooklyn dropped out, setting the stage for the 20-member delegation to back Heastie.

The Queens County committee also backed Heastie over Nolan, who said she plans to stay in the race.

Some insiders have suggested Heastie was looking to nail down support and force a speaker vote before the one scheduled for Feb. 10. Morelle said Heastie told him Thursday he was not looking to push up the date.

Morelle complained that county party leaders were trying to short-circuit the process to help Heastie.

“It would be a mistake for the body if there was some pronouncement, like the cardinals had chosen a Pope, without others being involved in it — and by others, I mean the members,” he said.

Packer Shoes and SNS To Drop this “Unreleased” Reebok Kamikaze II

Packer Shoes and SneakersNStuff have something special planned for this year’s 2015 All-Star festivities. The New Jersey shop has hooked up with Stockholm’s finest for a Reebok Question Mid, Insta Pump Fury, and now a Reebok Kamikaze II. This isn’t the first time the folks over at Packer have gotten their hands on the Reebok Kamikaze II either, as their “Remember the Alamo” All-Star reference proved to be one of the more creative collaborations of 2013. This ‘Unreleased’ Kamikaze II was a pair that Isaiah Thomas wore while with the Kings last year before making the jump to wearing exclusively Jordan Brand, but this pair ditches the Sac-town theme to have a New York Knicks like crest on the inner-lining. Check out more of the latest Packer Shoes x SNS team-up and look out for this collaborative effort to arrive mid-February.

You can never start the countdown until March Madness too soon. It’s easy to forget with all of the successes the Nike Dunk has had under the Nike SB category that the shoe actually started out as a performance basketball model. Nike occasionally throws references out here and there like this Nike Dunk High CMFT in a rather Jordan-esque Black/University Red look. The insoles feature a graphic of net-cutting for a subtle homage to college hoops’ highest honor. Information is still rather sparse on the pair, but it’s a safe bet that come March, Nike has something planned for what was once the go-to team model for collegiate basketball. More photos below.

BRONX NEWS: Family of Ramarley Graham settle suit with city for $3.9M

The family of slain Bronx teen Ramarley Graham agreed to accept .9 million from the city Friday to settle their wrongful death lawsuit, the Daily News has learned.

The settlement comes amid an ongoing federal investigation by Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara into possible civil rights violations against the NYPD cops involved in the Feb. 2, 2012 fatal shooting.

Officer Richard Haste, who fired the fatal shot after chasing Graham from the street into his home, was initially indicted by the Bronx district attorney for manslaughter, but a judge threw out the case on a legal technicality.

A second grand jury declined to indict the cop.

City Law Department spokesman Nick Paolucci said: “This was a tragic case. After evaluating all the facts, and consulting with key stakeholders such as the NYPD, it was determined that settling the matter was in the best interest of the City.”

Haste does not have to pay a dime toward the settlement, a source said.

Graham’s estate will receive .95 million; his brother will receive 0,000; his grandmother 0,000 and his mother ,000, sources said.

Besides emotional damages, the family also sought compensation for their alleged mistreatment by police who detained them after the shooting.

Police had claimed that Graham, 18, was suspected of participating in a drug deal.

Cops chased into his Williamsbridge home without a warrant and Haste claimed that he had heard over the police radio that Graham was armed. A a small bag of marijuana was recovered.

After Graham was gunned down in the bathroom, cops allegedly threatened to shoot his grieving grandmother, according to the suit filed in Bronx Supreme Court.

The suit also accused the NYPD of trying to cover up the killing, failing to properly train officers and engaging in racial discrimination through the stop-and-frisk policy.
