BRONX NEWS: 4 people miraculously survive Bronx crash that destroyed vehicle

Four people miraculously survived a two-car crash in the Bronx that decimated one of the cars early Sunday, officials said.

The driver of a black sedan smashed into several pillars and collided with another car after speeding east on Westchester Ave. near Sands Place in Middletown – Pelham Bay just before 6 a.m.

Medics took four people to a nearby hospital — one with serious injuries and three with minor injuries, authorities said.

First Look // Andrew Wiggins’ New adidas Crazy Explosive

words & images // Nick DePaula:

Little did Timberwolves fan know at the time, but rising forward Andrew Wiggins’ move to break out an all-green pair of his adidas Crazy Explosives during the second half of the season would not only ignite the start of his scoring flurry to close the year out, but also signal his seemingly endless potential all coming together at once.

“I was on a roll,” smiles Wiggins. “I was killing with those.”

The roll stretched from the last game of January — with a poster on Magic center Nikola Vucevic — and spanned all the way through the close of the season. During the month of February, Wiggins went on to average 28.8 points per game on over 50% shooting from the field in the “Green Lanterns,” as teammate Shabazz Muhammad dubbed them. Just before the All-Star break, he became just the second player in franchise history to drop back-to-back 40 point games.

What started out as just a player exclusive pair in the team’s most minor hue of their color palette, the vivid green look will now also be carried over into Wiggins’ shoe for this upcoming season, the Crazy Explosive 17.

With a fully knit collar for a more aggressive stance, the newest addition to the Crazy Explosive franchise also features a bold ‘ANDREW WIGGINS’ along the heel tab, just above his ‘AW’ logo icon that also slyly incorporates a Canadian maple leaf. He’ll have both the bright green option, along with a more traditional royal pair with green accents.

In last year’s debut Crazy Explosive model, Wigs took to Instagram to show off a similarly crazy explosive 720 dunk attempt. He says the new ’17 version is already helping him feel more bouncy in his summer workouts, and he’ll give the 720 another shot soon.

“Hopefully I can land it,” jokes Wiggins.

Check out Andrew’s exact size 16 player editions of the adidas Crazy Explosive 17 below, available at retail later this fall.

BRONX NEWS: CARIBBEAT: Make fare-beating ‘civil, not ‘criminal’

Deportation over a .75 subway fare is unfortunately a frightening reality that two Brooklyn politicians want to eliminate by decriminalizing subway fare-beating and making it a civil offense.

State Sen. Jesse Hamilton (D-Crown Heights) and Assemblywoman Tremaine Wright (D-Bedford-Stuyvesant) last week said turnstile-jumping cases, which predominately affect people of color with low incomes, would become noncriminal offenses under legislation they plan to introduce.

“Look at the numbers, 20,000 kids, 16 and 17, arrested every year; some of them have been incarcerated, getting criminal records for just .75! It makes no sense,” Hamilton said, noting the consequences for some immigrants can be dire.

“Also if you’re undocumented, now they (the federal government) can use that against you for deportation,” said Hamilton, who announced the decriminalization bill with Wright at a press conference last Tuesday attended by community activists and representatives of legal groups supporting the proposed measure.

ISSUES AIRED ON ‘COME CHAT’ TV SERIES

CARIBBEAT: Fillet of lionfish is fix for reef beef

The sentiments of “Vini Kozé” — Creole for “Come Chat” — now echo throughout the Eastern Caribbean with last week’s debut of a taped television series focused on achievements, development opportunities and challenges facing the region.

In the diaspora, the TV series can be seen on One Caribbean Television Fridays at 8 p.m., from Aug. 25 through Sept. 29.

The culmination of OECS Public Education Forum Series regional sessions held earlier this year, the “Vini Kozé” TV shows share the interaction of key decision makers, and grass-roots observers recorded in front of a live audience.

DONATING LIFESAVING DEFIBRILLATORS

Being prepared to save lives is what this week’s Team Jamaica Bickle “Defibrillator to Schools Program” presentation and training session at G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport in Jamaica is all about.

On Wednesday, officials from the program — started in 2014 following the death of a St. Jago High School student Cavahn McKenzie at a cross country meet — will donate lifesaving automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and give instructions in their use.

This year, eight high schools and two institutions will receive AEDs through the program.

Rusea’s High, Charlie Smith High, Lennon High, Spaulding’s High, Tivoli High, Eltham High, St. Mary’s High, and Bellefield High have been selected to receive defibrillators.

G.C. Foster College of Sport and Physical Education and The Jamaica Association of Emergency Medical Technicians will also receive the devices.

Since 2014, TJB has donated 21 AED units to schools and trained close to 100 staff members. This week’s donation brings the total to 31. The goal is to equip every high school on the island with a unit.

“We have seen where our efforts have inspired other diaspora organizations contribute AEDs to several schools and medical institutions,” said TJB CEO and founder Irwine Clare.

BRONX NEWS: Bronx teacher gives students taste of rural life with school farm

J.M. Rapport High School teacher Michael Masefield wanted to give his Bronx students access to fresh food and a break from city life.

So he built a farm with vegetables and a chicken coop on school grounds, and taught his students how to grow crops and raise animals.

For giving kids from some of the city’s toughest neighborhoods a fresh perspective on food and their lives, Masefield is nominated for a Hometown Heroes in Education award.

The work has been a labor of love for Masefield, an English instructor who’s taught in city schools since 2009 and operates his on-campus farm after normal classes end.

NYC principal ditches admissions screening to boost diversity

All of his students have serious learning disabilities or behavioral issues, and few of them have ever worked on a garden before.

But Masefield said working with underserved students comes easily to him.

“Things that drive other people crazy don’t get to me,” said Masefield, 30, whose passion for gardening earned him the nickname “Farmer Mike” from his friends.

“These kids are used to being seen a certain way, but I give them the benefit of the doubt,” he said. “A lot of times they just haven’t had the right outlets or people didn’t give them a chance.”

NYC school worker drives far to get kids graduation, prom outfits

J.M. Rapport students mostly hail from the school’s hardscrabble Mott Haven neighborhood.

Many are behind in their schooling and some of them have been involved in crimes. Masefield’s farm is an unusual sight to them.

It wraps around the J.M. Rapport campus in a narrow strip, with about a dozen elevated beds holding tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables.

The farm also boasts a chicken coop with seven birds who all lay eggs, plus a greenhouse for seedlings.

Manhattan school founder offers girls a path into business

And Masefield uses an indoor classroom space to grow hydroponic crops and cook food from the farm with students.

About 10 kids participated in Masefield’s after-school farming club during the school year that ended in June.

Another half-dozen kids are working with Masefield on the farm over the summer.

Only a small number of students are involved so far, but more are signing up each year for the farming activities that Masefield began in 2015.

And for those students who do work on the farm, a transformation often takes place.

“Kids who have violent backgrounds become really calm when they hold a chicken,” Masefield said.

“And kids who have a hard time explaining a math problem can do very well when it comes to explaining what’s going on at the farm.”

The new experiences may help kids perform in their regular classes or handle issues they face outside school, Masefield said.

“Farming is a hands-on activity,” Masefield said.

“A lot of the kids who don’t do so well academically excel at the farm.”

BRONX NEWS: NYPD gets threats over cuffing trooper for driving drunk in Bronx

A New York State Trooper’s arrest for drunk driving in the Bronx has frayed tensions between police and the law enforcement agency, sources said Saturday.

Police arrested Trooper Dana Narvaez, 42, near his home when cops found him passed out behind the wheel of his idling car. When he was given a Breathalyzer, he scored more than double the legal limit.

Cops charged him with drunk driving. A judge ordered him released from custody after a brief arraignment.

But since Narvaez’s arrest, cops from the 45th Precinct have received calls from people claiming to be state troopers seeking retaliation, police sources said.

New Yorkers support Cuomo moving more state troopers to NYC: poll

“It’s on,” one caller threatened.

In response, NYPD union leaders have let their membership know about the threats, and encouraged everyone to obey the rules of the road to the letter, especially if driving in Westchester or upstate.

“We just wanted the members to be careful on the road and obey the speed limit because they’re looking,” said one union head, who wished not to be named. “We’ve been down this road before.”

State Trooper spokesman Beau Duffy said Narvaez was suspended without pay. Rumors of retaliation are “pure nonsense.”

“That will not happen,” he said.” The State Police have an outstanding relationship with the NYPD.”
