Nike Air Tuned Max // Throwback Thursday

words by Seth Berke

Air is what makes it good. Welcome to this edition of @nicekicks vintage sneaker history retrospective. In honor of the upcoming Skepta x Nike Air Max 97 collaborative sneaker set to debut this weekend, today’s article pays special tribute to a sneaker which serves as the impetus and motivation for their project – the 1999 Nike Air Tuned Max in the original Dark Charcoal/Celery-Saturn Red colorway.

Let’s set the stage for the era as the late 1990s were an amazing time in sports, sneakers and culture. You simply had it all. In pop culture you had great music, political gossip and scandal. In sports you had the NBA on NBC and legendary rivalries across the map including Agassi and Sampras in tennis, McGwire and Sosa in baseball, among many others.

Regarding sneakers and sneaker culture at the time, the late ’90s saw Jordan Retro releases beginning with the AJ4 Retro at reasonable price points with high quality construction and original branding, the creation of the Alpha Project by Nike and the development of Tuned Air, touted as the next generation of Nike Air technology.

Designed for the competitive runner, Tuned Air took the Air Max concept and modified it further, creating air bags with different pressures and strategically placing them throughout the length of the midsole.

Nike Air Tuned Max

Rather than offering a single-pressure air sole unit, the Tuned Max employed a total of 15 different, finely-tuned air bags for maximum responsiveness and comfort during foot strike. Interestingly, depending on shoe size, the air bags would be tuned to different pressures.

At an original retail price of 0 and weighing just 11.9 ounces, this model was hailed as the lightest Air Max ever produced by Nike. Also of note, the Tuned Max used other innovative technology as well including a seamless, one-piece upper composed of a synthetic leather and mesh, Phylon midsole with full-length Tuned Air and a BRS 1000 carbon rubber outsole.

Nike Air Tuned Max

The Nike Alpha Project’s five dots can be seen at the heel symbolizing innovation, imagination and technology. While some consider the Tuned Max to be a classic by virtue of its game-changing and highly innovative technology, this silhouette has yet to receive the retro treatment and possesses a sort of love/hate relationship among Nike running enthusiasts, collectors and the sneaker community in general which further adds to its allure and place in Nike running history.

The OG Tuned Max. Was it good for you?

BRONX NEWS: CARNIVAL 2017: Masqueraders blend color and cause

At times, along the New York Caribbean Carnival Parade route, music blares and singers wail, but the loudest element by far is the cascade of colorful, elaborate carnival costumes born of uniquely creative design concepts.

And this year will be no different, with the inclusion of ensembles such as New Waves!’ processional performance, “Whitewash,” and CAFE’s socially conscious “Mas in Fashion – A Fashion Parade Against Human Trafficking.”

Innovation and imagination rule in the iconic masquerade element of carnival, and costumed revelers are divided into large, medium and small groups for their 2.2-mile trek along Brooklyn’s Eastern Parkway.

More than 30 adult costume groups will travel along the parkway on Sept. 4, including individual masqueraders vying for King, Queen, Male and Female Character titles.

And as many as 36 youth groups are signed up for a Junior Carnival Parade on Saturday.

Meanwhile, in preparation for the Labor Day parade on the parkway, the “Whitewash” processional performance by New Waves! (an initiative of the Trinidad-based Dance and Performance Institute of dancers and performance artists) is marshaling groups of masked revelers who’ll be dressed in reverent white during their Caribbean dance show at Monday’s carnival parade.

This 2017 New Waves! iteration is made up of seven sections of costumes created by designers Brianna McCarthy, Robert Young, Vulgar Fraction, Tracey Sankar-Charleau, Sonja Dumas, Chris Walker and Jhawhan Thomas.

Also ready for carnival parade is the “Mas in Fashion – A Fashion Parade Against Human Trafficking,” from CAFE (the Caribbean American Fashion Exchange) — a procession with the social mission of highlighting the vile practice of human trafficking with the goal of ending it.

CAFE, under the direction of Janice Lawrence-Clarke of JLC Productions, uses Caribbean culture and New York City’s fashion capital status as tools to achieve its social mission, and create a fashion runway on Eastern Parkway.

To promote the anti-trafficking effort, CAFE has teamed up with the Yet She Rise organization, which fights human trafficking and aids exploited young women from Puerto Rico, the Bahamas and other parts of the Caribbean.

And to make its fashion component possible, CAFE will present the work of clothing and accessories designers such as Melissa Edwards and Noir Collins (Jamaica), Akeisha Bowles (Montserrat), Bridget Ward (St. Vincent and the Grenadines), Rodney Alexander, Steven Daniel, Donna Dove (Trinidad and Tobago), Carlos Williams and Winsome Lees (Guyana), Terance Taitt (Bermuda) and Bryan K. Osburn (U.S.).

Nike Roshe Run Goes “Grinch” on Clean Custom

While we’ve seen a variety of animals influence tons of sneakers in the past, snakes are perhaps the strongest thanks to the Black Mamba and his “Grinch” Christmas kicks.

Bago Customs dared to integrate the vicious reptile into this custom pair of Roshes and they’re dope. The entire shoe is decked out in a light, vibrant green that definitely catches any eye. The laces have hints of black and a lighter, yellowish green that give this pair a reptilian feel to it.

What really makes this pair stand out are the light airbrush strokes on the midsoles of the shoe that give it those small, intricate details to make this custom really live up to its inspiration.

Take a look at these kicks below and be sure to follow Bago Customs here for more fire content.
