BRONX NEWS: Bronx stabbing victim awoke from coma, learns best friend is dead

Bronx school stabbing victim Ariane Laboy, after two days in a coma, awoke wanting two things: An egg roll and some good news about his best friend.

“That’s when his dad said, ‘Son, your friend is dead,’” family friend Donald Wilson recounted Saturday. “(Laboy) didn’t want to talk to anybody anymore. Everybody had to leave the hospital.”

The 16-year-old Laboy, stabbed in the chest Wednesday by an oft-bullied bisexual classmate, remained in a coma until Friday.

Wilson was at the hospital Friday when Laboy’s dad emerged from the room at St. Barnabas Hospital after breaking the news to his son.

Mom recalls horror of seeing dying son after Bx. school stabbing

“He woke up and they got him some Chinese food,” recalled Wilson, 24. “He said, ‘I’m not hungry. I want the egg roll. Can I give the rest of this to Matthew?’”

His friend Matthew McCree, 15, was mortally wounded in the classroom stabbing spree at the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation.

Laboy was stabbed and gashed when he jumped to the aid of a badly bleeding McCree, who died a short time later — the first New York City school killing since 1993.

Their classmate Abel Cedeno, 18 and a fifth-year senior, stabbed both youths with a switchblade as their terrified classmates and teachers watched helplessly.

Bronx school stabber says he didn’t mean to kill his bully

Cedeno remained jailed Saturday on Rikers Island, held on a murder charge in the attack. A judge ordered the teen suspect placed on a suicide watch, too.

Cedeno said his sexuality made him a target for anti-gay venom and occasional physical abuse, although cops said his homicidal rage was directed at the wrong two teens.

Though Laboy and McCree reportedly tossed broken pencil shards and wads of paper at Cedeno before the stabbings, cops said the pair had no previous bullying interactions with their attacker.

McCree’s family has yet to set a funeral date for their son, and his teary mom defended Matthew against allegations of bullying.

Bronx teen who killed classmate was mocked with homophobic slurs

“My son was no bully,” said his mother Louna Dennis, 34. “He was a wonderful child and got along with everybody.”

Friends of the slain youth were outraged by Cedeno’s jailhouse interview where he insisted the knife was meant only to scare off his tormentors.

“Come on, you brought a knife to a fistfight,” said neighbor Krissy Guevera, 25. “What did you think was going to happen? It just went entirely too far.

“It should’ve never happened. It could have been avoided, but it wasn’t.”

Student stabbed to death with switchblade at Bronx school

Cedeno is due back Tuesday in Bronx Criminal Court, and was expected to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

The aspiring actor said he was in a daze after stabbing the two teens, unsure as he walked into the principal’s office whether the incident was even real.

Cedeno — who identified as bisexual — said classmates targeted him for vitriol because he was different.

Some kids called Cedeno a “f—-t,” and he recounted other students bouncing him off hallway lockers.

The mayor’s office and the City Council plan Monday hearings to investigate bullying issues in New York schools.

BRONX NEWS: Bronx apartment building fire kills 2, leaves 5 others injured

A fire in a Bronx apartment building killed two men and injured five others early Saturday, including one resident who remains in critical condition, officials said.

The fire erupted on the tenth floor of the 13-story building on E. Tremont Ave. near Dogwood Drive in Parkchester around 1:10 a.m., officials said.

First responders rushed John Quinones, 75, to Jacobi Medical Center, where he died.

Investigators found another man unconscious and unresponsive in a hallway in the building. He died at the scene. First responders were not immediately able to identify him. The city Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine his cause of death.

“I couldn’t sleep because it was coming into my nose so strongly,” she said. “I was alarmed. I looked through the peephole and saw firefighters in the hallway.”

Thomas said she saw a man being taken out on a stretcher an hour and a half later.

“They were trying to revive him,” she said. “There were ambulances and fire trucks everywhere.”

BRONX NEWS: Bronx school stabber says he didn’t mean to kill his bully

The accused teen killer calls it a case of murder by mistake.

Jailed homicide suspect Abel Cedeno claims he brought a two-week old switchblade to school strictly for self-defense, with no thought of carving up two classmates.

“I guess I just snapped,” Cedeno told the Daily News in a Rikers Island interview. “I didn’t mean to kill him. I wanted to scare him.”

The bisexual Bronx teen accused of fatally gutting classmate Matthew McRee, 15, insisted Friday that he never intended to plunge the serrated knife into his unarmed victim’s torso.

McRee’s best friend, 16-year-old Ariane Laboy, was stabbed in the chest Wednesday morning during a history class that turned into a bloodbath before horrified students and faculty.

Laboy remained hospitalized two days after the attack.

Cedeno, speaking at the jail where he was held without bail and under a suicide watch, insisted he was the victim of anti-gay bullying long before his angry explosion inside the East Tremont high school.

“They bully me because I’m different,” said Cedeno, 18, who was charged with murder and attempted murder in the Bronx classroom melee. “I’m not like the other guys. My voice is higher.”

The soft-spoken suspect chatted with a reporter in an emotionless tone about the verbal and occasionally physical abuse inflicted on him since middle school over his sexuality.

Fellow students slurred him as a “f—-t,” while angrier classmates slammed Cedeno into hallway lockers, he said.

Cedeno, who said he identifies as bisexual, wore a gray jumpsuit as he answered questions about the first slaying inside a city school since 1993.

At one point, he removed his glasses and wiped at his eyes.

The accused killer said he was unsure if the stabbing really happened after he walked into the school principal’s office and surrendered the knife.

“I was having a panic attack,” he said.

Cedeno, who brought the switchblade online about two weeks prior to the bloody school stabbing spree, insisted that he made the purchase “to protect myself.”

He was arrested without incident after stabbing McRee and Laboy at the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation, cops said.

On Friday, about half the student body stayed home rather then return to the scene of the crime.

Both Mayor de Blasio and the City Council announced plans for Monday hearings on the bullying issue.

Statistics indicate that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning students are twice as likely to be bullied in city schools as heterosexual kids.

The 2015 New York City Youth Risk Behavior Survey shows 24% of LGBTQ students were bullied on school property, compared with 13% of non-LGBTQ youth.

Roughly half of LGBTQ students had experienced depression, compared to about a quarter of their non-LGBTQ peers, the study indicated.

And despite Education Department moves to support LGBTQ students, including the hiring of a public liaison, more needs to be done, according to critics.

“Principals and teachers still feel unsupported in their efforts to combat bullying in their schools, especially as it relates to LGBT issues,” said Council member Daniel Dromm, chair of its education committee.

Cedeno recounted a somewhat rootless life, bouncing between homes and a shelter in Queens and the Bronx and attending at least seven different schools over the years.

This was his fifth year at the wildlife-focused “Zoo School,” where he was repeating the 12th grade.

“Abell felt an isolation because all his closest friends had already graduated,” said a school math teacher Friday. “He was committed to the performing arts. Abel wanted to be an actor.”

Though classes only started on Sept. 7, Cedeno estimated he had already missed 10 days. His father is battling lung cancer, and his mom is trapped in Puerto Rico by Hurricane Maria.

Family friends claim Cedeno was the target of ethnic and anti-gay slurs since the school year began three weeks ago. But police said neither of the youths stabbed Wednesday had any prior beef with Cedeno.

“I will hold their memory in my heart,” Cedeno said of MeRee, who died shortly after the stabbing, and Laboy, who remained hospitalized.

Cedeno acknowledged ignoring family members and other supporters who turned out for his Thursday arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court.

“I didn’t turn around to look at the people,” he said. “I feel like a failure.”
