BRONX NEWS: NYCHA growing its urban farms program in Bronx, Staten Island

The city is planting a seed at two more NYCHA developments — building urban farms where kids can cultivate their green thumbs.

New farms will be built at the Forest Houses in the Bronx and a yet to be chosen NYCHA complex on Staten Island, officials announced Wednesday. The city will spend 0,000 on the project.

Farms have already opened at four other sites — sprouting crops of okra, eggplant, radishes, cucumbers, cherries and more.

“For communities that have been neglected for too long, farms like this mean new opportunities for healthy food, for exercise, for employment,” said first lady Chirlane McCray, who visited the farm at Wagner Houses in East Harlem to announce the plan.

The existing farms have given out more than 25,000 pounds of produce free to NYCHA residents.

“It’s become a catchphrase, farm to table, which means rural, it doesn’t mean inner city,” said TV chef Carla Hall, who toured the farm with the pols, welcoming the site of “these gardens built on top of asphalt.”

“These kids … are trying new foods that they would never try before because their hands are in the soil,” she said.

Another Look at the Nike Flyknit Trainer “Bright Citron”

The latest in a long line Nike Flyknit Trainers releasing five years removed from its debut back in 2012, the “Bright Citron” appears to be next up to bat. On-foot images of the shoe are revealed today.

Vindicated by Asphalt Gold, this non-OG colorway is one of several that pits light shades against fall climate. The “Cirrus Blue” pair does the exact same. This yellow pair even more so, given its not mustard yellow and closer to canary yellow, typically a spring look.

Expect this Nike Flyknit Trainer “Bright Citron” on October 5.

Remembering Gary Warnett, Renowned Sneaker Journalist

Yesterday, word quickly spread through our insular community that we had lost a genuine legend: Gary Warnett, the widely respected and beloved sneaker scribe has passed away at 39. Not only was the UK native a reliable resource with two decades in the business, Gary was known for his kindness and humor, a straight shooter whose enthusiasm for sneakers, style and popular culture was both pure and infectious.

Gary acted as a consultant and copywriter for various brands throughout the sneaker industry, but for many admirers, first exposure to his work came via Crooked Tongues, the pioneering sneaker-obsessed site where he was the content manager and editor. Even as the community mourns, Gary will be long remembered for his keen insight, his breadth of knowledge and his one-of-a-kind style.

Rest in peace, Gary.

BRONX NEWS: Bronx teen who killed classmate was mocked with homophobic slurs

A Bronx teen accused of fatally stabbing a bullying classmate was tormented with homophobic and racist slurs until he finally exploded, according to family friends.

The bullying and abuse heaped upon Abel Cedeno, 18, was previously reported to officials at his Bronx high school without any response, said friend Savannah Hornbeck as accused killer Abel Cedeno awaited arraignment.

“The kids were calling him a f—-t, calling him a s–c,” said Hornbeck, 34. “After it had been reported numerous times and there was no reaction from the school, Abel felt (there was) no other way out.”

Cedeno was arrested Wednesday for the murder of 15-year-old Matthew McCree and the stabbing of a second youth as horrified students in their history class watched helplessly.

Student stabbed to death with switchblade at Bronx school

It was the first slaying inside a city school since February 1993.

A second Cedeno family friend, Iris Couvertier, said she spoke with Abel inside the 48th Precinct after his arrest.

“Those two kids in the class, they hit him,” she said. “He said that they hit him in the face. He said it’s because he’s gay or bisexual.”

Hornbeck said Cedeno often returned home in tears after enduring the bullying of McCree and the second stabbing victim Ariane Laboy, 16.

As cops led Cedeno out of the precinct late Wednesday, the suspect — wearing a pink T-shirt, a gray hoodie and a pensive stare — silently mouthed the word “yes” when asked if he was bullied.

He’d recently purchased the alleged murder weapon online, police said.

Laboy remained in critical but stable condition at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx. McCree was pronounced dead at the same hospital — where his mother was working at the time of the attacks, according to her husband.

“His mother is in bad shape,” said spouse Kyle Victor, 34. “She’s still in shock. She’s still not crying. She’s numb.”

Victor defended the accused bully as a “a good kid, very smart, very loving.”

McCree and Laboy were breaking pencils and tossing the broken pieces at Cedeno’s head before the accused killer attacked his tormentors, police said.

Cedeno lunged at McCree with his stainless steel switchblade, stabbing and slashing the victim’s chest and torso, police said.

According to police sources, Cedeno never said a word to cops about why he was targeted by McCree, Laboy and other classmates since school began Sept. 7.

“He never went into specifics,” said one NYPD source. “If family and word on the street are saying that he was gay, there may be some truth to that.”

Cedeno’s move from the classroom to the courtroom came after authorities installed metal detectors early Thursday at the Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Conservation in East Tremont.

Mayor de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina were on hand to welcome students back into the troubled school less than 24 hours after the stabbing spattered blood across a fifth-floor classroom.

Foot District Used a Gaming System for In-Store Raffles

Fairness surrounding hyped sneaker releases is always a cause of concern for those competing for said shoes. It’s a methodology brands and retailers have attempted to master for years now. The truth of the matter is that fair, in tangible terms, is almost impossible to simplify in these instances. But can’t it at least be fun?

Madrid-based Foot District is on the fast track to nailing both.

Earlier this week, for the release of the highly anticipated Nike Air Max 1 “Anniversary,” the shop essentially gamified the raffle process by implementing a slot machine into the fold. Here’s how it worked: 100 raffle tickets were distributed to all potential buyers. Each customer competed for their respective size by attempted to get the highest score with a pull from the slot machine. The winner is then granted rights to purchase a pair in their size. Pretty cool, no? And far more fun than simply striking out on the couch or driving to the shop only to not have your name called or number pulled.

Check out a few images from Foot District‘s gamified sneaker raffle below and let us know how you feel about this concept.
