BRONX NEWS: Here’s a recent history of violence in NYC schools

Until Wednesday’s stabbing in the Bronx, a killing had not occurred inside a city school for nearly a quarter-century. These are the last few times it happened:

Feb. 24, 1993: A 15-year-old emotionally disabled student at Junior High School 25 on the Lower East Side stabbed a classmate to death. School officials at the time said there were a series of altercations between the two when John Rodriguez killed Angel Jimenez.

Sept. 21, 1992: Damion Ennis, 15, was stabbed to death in a hallway at South Shore High School in Canarsie, Brooklyn. He was attacked by classmate Michael Bubb, who was wielding a dagger, police said at the time. A dean and school security guard saw the attack and grabbed Bubb, but it was too late for Ennis.

Feb. 26, 1992: A teen gunman shot two rivals to death inside Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn. The shooting took place just 15 feet from two police officers and happened about an hour before then-Mayor David Dinkins had planned to visit the school.

Schools have not been immune to violence since then:

Jan. 15, 2002: Two students, ages 16 and 17, were shot inside Martin Luther King Jr. High School on the Upper West Side but survived.

June 18, 2014: Noel Estevez, 14, fatally stabbed Timothy Crump, also 14, outside Intermediate School 117 on Morris Ave. in Mount Hope, the Bronx. Police said Estevez killed his classmate, and onetime friend, because he had robbed him and taken his cell phone.

BRONX NEWS: De Blasio’s policies in question after Bronx school stabbing

An election-year school killing. There won’t be a moment of silence.

Wednesday’s tragic stabbing at Urban Assembly School for Wildlife Management will get immediate attention from Mayor de Blasio and his critics.

De Blasio will call for a full investigation, demanding time for police and education officials to get the facts. Who is the killer and was his relationship to the victims? Was bullying involved and, if so, who was bullied and who was the bully? Were prior disciplinary actions warranted and taken? Did the school or its private network, the Urban Assembly, see this coming? And if not, why not?!

Legitimate, edgier questions will be raised by others. Is the Education Department’s new policy of Restorative Justice, seeking to avoid suspensions and other punitive measures, too soft to address violence-prone students? Would metal detectors have prevented the incident? Is the NYPD-run school security system at fault?

Student stabbed to death with switchblade at Bronx school

Other good questions to ask de Blasio and the educators in charge: Were other students in the building, including kids as young as 6, vulnerable to the attack? Should the school, with known instructional and safety issues, be closed?

All these questions deserve clear answers. It is too soon to draw any direct connection between Wednesday’s attack and mayoral policies. Some critics will draw unfair conclusions based on this single, thankfully rare, incident. But the public, particularly parents, deserve an objective accounting for what clearly went terribly wrong on a hot September morning in the Bronx. These things don’t just happen and the mayor has too often postponed other pressing matters, wrapping procrastination in self-righteousness.

And that’s what makes de Blasio vulnerable. His leadership, his management, his policies are now more open to question than ever. There won’t be, there shouldn’t be, a moment of silence. Not at City Hall. Candid explanations are needed, and long before Election Day.

Bloomfield is an education professor at Brooklyn College and the CUNY Graduate Center.

Nike SF-AF1 Navy/Gum // Available Now

Much of the summer, Nike has largely focused their efforts of the SF-AF1 Mid, a budding variation of the militaristic style they unveiled in late 2016. Yet now that fall is underway and weather will quickly begin to cool, the SF-AF1 proper is back in play with a very quiet release of a simplistic Navy/Gum colorway.

Joining premium leather, ballistic nylon, and stylish yet functional auxiliary paracord straps, it’s easy to see why the silhouette became the gem that it is today not even a full year into its existence. This subtle navy palette is balanced perfectly by a gum outer, giving the shoe a sporty dynamic to coincide with its utilitarian overhaul.

Grab this Nike SF-AF1 Navy/Gum now at select retailers like Burn Rubber.

BRONX NEWS: Bronx carjacker robs 5 cabbies with knife, gun — stealing 4 cars

A serial carjacker brandishing a knife and gun robbed five cab drivers — including a 90-year-old man — during a week-long crime spree in the Bronx, police said Wednesday.

The string of robberies began when the crook flagged down a red Honda CR-V livery car at a red light near 169th St. and Third Ave. in Morrisania around 8:50 p.m. on Sept. 18, according to authorities.

He pulled a gun on the driver and drove off with the vehicle, cops said.

Two days later, the thief hailed a 2004 Lincoln Town Car near Fordham Road and Webster Ave. in Fordham Heights around 3 p.m.

Livery cab strikes, seriously injures man riding Citi Bike

He flashed a knife fifteen minutes into the ride, forcing his 90-year-old driver to pull over before driving off with the elderly man’s cab near Boston Road and Secor Ave. in Eastchester.

The carjacker struck again the following day when he was picked up by a gold 2008 Lincoln Town Car at the corner of Fordham Road and Webster Ave. around 6:45 p.m.

Shocking video released by cops Wednesday shows the carjacker lunge from the backseat and thrust a large black knife toward the 66-year-old driver as he is driven to E. 241st St. and Bullard Ave. in Wakefield.

The brute held the blade to the victim’s throat and prodded an unknown object against his rib cage, forcing the driver out of the vehicle before driving off with his car, according to police.

Comedian Travon Free says cabbie passed him because he’s black

He resumed his relentless rash of robberies about six hours later, hopping into a black Toyota Camry livery car at the corner of E. Gunhill Road and Decatur Ave. in Norwood around 1:30 a.m. Sept. 22, authorities said.

The thief brandished a knife and drove off with the Camry after forcing the 50-year-old driver to flee his cab, cops said.

Three days later, the carjacker was picked up by a 2005 Dodge livery cab near Broadway and W. 242 St. in Kingsbridge around 1:15 a.m., according to police.

He pulled a gun on the 52-year-old driver and demanded to be driven to Yonkers, cops said. Along the way, the crook demanded the cabbie pull over, then put the victim in a chokehold while holding a gun to his body, police said.

The victim fought back and the robber ran off.

The suspect is described as about 5-foot-6, 180 to 200 pounds, with a full beard and medium to dark complexion. He was last seen wearing a gray long-sleeved sweatshirt and black Yankees baseball hat.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.

Remembering Gary Warnett

The tragic news of the passing of Gary Warnett has hit many in the footwear world today. More than one of the greatest story tellers and historians in our business, he was a very good friend loved by many around the globe.

Gary’s passion for sneakers, the history, and the people in the business was practically unmatched by anyone. His depth of knowledge and connection between products and culture made for some of the greatest conversations one could ever experience. His vast depth of knowledge came to life with his incredible skills as a writer. When you saw a post “by Gary Warnett,” you knew it was going to be a great experience as a reader no matter the subject of the piece.

Today has been a sad one to say the very least. Gary will be forever loved and remembered by so many – a true legend.

Below are some memories shared by people today about Gary. I would like to keep this open for others to share a few words about him. Please feel free to email me at [email protected].

The first time I met Gary Warnett was, of course, at a sneaker event. It was at the Los Angeles launch for Eric Koston’s first Nike signature shoe, back in 2011.

We’d known of and even known each other much longer than that, through e-mails and blog posts in those pre-Twitter days. Gary was the guy to ask about any bit of sneaker esoterica, and even if he didn’t have the exact answer you needed, you’d undoubtedly learn something. In an industry desperately lacking context, where retro product was seemingly launched at random, Gary was the ultimate contextualizer, able to discuss in equal detail a particular sneaker, the clothes it complemented, the movies it appeared in, or the obscure hip-hop tracks that dropped around the same time. His blog, Gwarizm, was and is an invaluable source written in his inimitable style, tying together the most disparate topics.

His writing illuminated, and the sneakers he worked on—whether you knew it or not—also told stories.

He was one of a kind. He will be missed.

–Russ Bengtson

The world lost an incredible man.

First things first, Gary was above all things a true gentleman. He was such a wonderful and genuine person that I had the great pleasure to call a friend for so many years.

Secondly, Gary was one of the most talented writers ever. Any piece he wrote was always such a pleasure to read. Not only were his pieces always so solid with facts, but they were presented in such a great way that made reading them so enjoyable.

Lastly, this man was a scholar and guru of all things fresh.  Practically no one knew as much about sneakers as him – no one.

– DJ Clark Kent

Gary was one of the most knowledgable and insightful people I have ever met, and was also one of the most personable too.

He was one of the few heroes in the sneaker world that I had never met for so many years and was so grateful for the opportunity to cross paths with him. It was almost like a fanboy moment for me meeting him because he really was just such an incredible person who I had respected and admired for so many years.

Even though I wasn’t very close to him, as a fan of his work and having met him a couple times it impacts me so much. And I think it says so much about him that it had that effect on me.

Rest in peace, Gary.

– Jacques Slade

RIP to a pioneer. By the time I had met Gary, his reputation proceeded him. @airrev couldn’t have been more on point. Gary was literally salt of the earth. When it came to this industry, his knowledge, acumen and downright care for the what ifs and whys were unparalleled. Gary was Einstein. Gary cared about the past, but more importantly how to properly curate the future. We, and the industry are weakened. May his family only have blessings going forward and his memory be one we all carry forward in our day to day.

A post shared by Mike packer (@mikepacker_) on

Rest in power to this goddamn sneaker savant. At one time he referred to me, @operatoremz and @chris_hall_antiques as a “trinity of footwear jedis.” If that’s true, then @gwarizm is the Yoda of the game. Life is too short. Wear your damn shoes.

My heart aches and tears fall at reading every message, insta, Twitter, Facebook and blog post and I’m sure there are many more to come. Our world will never be the same again without Gary Warnett. A genuine scholar in culture, a true genius and an incredibly beautiful mind who can NEVER be replaced. Never have I felt so much sadness in my life before today. Let’s remember everything great about this man…it was an absolute pleasure and privilege working with you mate. RIP Gary Warnett aka GWARIZM aka GWAR aka my friend…I miss you so much ❤️
