BRONX NEWS: Bronx apartment building fire kills 2, leaves 5 others injured

A fire in a Bronx apartment building killed two men and injured five others early Saturday, including one resident who remains in critical condition, officials said.

The fire erupted on the tenth floor of the 13-story building on E. Tremont Ave. near Dogwood Drive in Parkchester around 1:10 a.m., officials said.

First responders rushed John Quinones, 75, to Jacobi Medical Center, where he died.

Investigators found another man unconscious and unresponsive in a hallway in the building. He died at the scene. First responders were not immediately able to identify him. The city Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine his cause of death.

Derri Thomas, 53, a resident on the 11th floor, woke up to the smell of smoke around 1 a.m.

“I couldn’t sleep because it was coming into my nose so strongly,” she said. “I was alarmed. I looked through the peephole and saw firefighters in the hallway.”

Thomas said she saw a man being taken out on a stretcher an hour and a half later.

“They were trying to revive him,” she said. “There were ambulances and fire trucks everywhere.”
