BRONX NEWS: Man gets 22 years for 2015 NYC hammer attacks, assault on cop

A Bronx man who used a hammer to attack a cop and other victims in a terrifying 2015 two-day crime spree was sentenced Wednesday to 22 years in prison.

David Baril, 32, had pleaded guilty to the random violence that began on May 11, 2015, in Manhattan.

Baril’s victims — all three of whom were clocked in the head with the handyman’s tool — included a 20-year-old man at 35th St. and Sixth Ave., a 28-year-old woman in Union Square Park and a 33-year-old woman on W. 17th St.

Police Officer Lauren O’Rourke and her partner Geraldo Casaigne spotted the suspect two days after he first struck in Midtown and approached him.

That’s when Baril attacked O’Rourke with his hammer and was shot by her partner four times. The suspect survived and was charged with attempted aggravated assault on a police officer and assault in the second degree.

“For two full days in 2015, New Yorkers were gripped with fear as a hammer-wielding man was on the loose in Manhattan,” Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. said in a statement.

A woman who identified herself as Baril’s mother, Sarah Wellington, said outside the courtroom that her son has been suffering from signs of mental illness since his high school days.

She said he started college but could not finish due to his “sickness,” Wellington said.
