BRONX NEWS: Pair embezzled nearly $130G from Bronx day care: DA

Two board members at a Bronx day care embezzled nearly 0,000 from the nonprofit program, spending money on clothes and a relative’s funeral, prosecutors said Thursday.

Paulette New, 63, the board chairwoman at the now-closed East Tremont Head Start Alumni Day Care Center, siphoned 0,000 from the center’s bank account between 2011 and 2015, using the cash to pay for her sister’s funeral, a Department of Investigation probe revealed.

She also used the money to buy clothes and other goods at Macy’s and home shopping sites like QVC and HSN, prosecutors said.

Angela Grindley, 56, the day care’s treasurer, is accused of stealing more than ,000 since 2013.

Both were indicted on grand larceny charges.

The day care center, which had several locations in the Bronx, shut down in 2015, law enforcement sources said.

Bronx District Attorney Darcel Clark said that the embezzlement helped speed the nonprofit to its demise.

“Their reckless actions contributed to the closing of this day care, resulting in children and workers who had to be placed in other facilities,” she said. “We will not tolerate rip-offs of government funds.”

Attempts to reach New and Grindley were unsuccessful.
