Jay-Z Named Creative Consultant for PUMA Basketball

PUMA has been dormant in the basketball space for a couple of decades now but that’s clearly set to change, as the brand has recently turned heads by signing Deandre Ayton, the projected No. 1 pick in this week’s NBA draft, as well as presumptive first-rounders Marvin Bagley III and Zhaire Smith. (They represent the brand’s first NBA endorsements since Vince Carter signed with PUMA in 1998.) But the most high-profile signing may involve a partnership with a non-athlete: PUMA has inked a deal with Jay-Z as the division’s creative consultant, a position that will see the rapper directing the brand’s art design, as well as the overall aesthetic concept of the PUMA basketball brand.

“We’re making a serious statement about the entry of the category, that we want to be a performance brand, but then also very culturally focused,” says Adam Petrick, PUMA’s global director of brand and marketing. “It’s clear that we’re looking at basketball through the lens of culture, and thinking about the fashion of basketball, the music of basketball, all the aspects of culture around basketball as much as the on court presence that we will have.”

Nike Presents Kevin Durant’s Latest Signature Shoe, the KD11

Image via: Nike

Image via: Nike

The basic concept behind the KD11, Kevin Durant’s new signature shoe, began with a comfort quest. The NBA Finals MVP wanted a broken-in feel, one that didn’t require the laces to be tied too tight, and it was left to Nike designer Leo Chang to find the technologies that would match what Durant was after. The solution was found in the rubber cups sole that houses both Nike React and Nike Zoom, with the former provides cushioning between court and body, while the latter sits just under the foot to provide response. Atop the foam element, which is taller than what’s found in typical basketball shoes, is a version of Nike Flyknit that feels softer and more broken-in. Additionally, the sock and collar are inspired by the Air Sock Racer, a shoe that Durant considers a past favorite.

The Nike KD11 will be available in June and July in the blue Paranoid colorway and the black/white Still KD colorway.

Nike Officially Unveils the React Element 87

Image via: Nike

Image via: Nike

In announcing the launch of the highly anticipated Element React 87, Nike pulls back the curtain to reveal how the shoe was made. The first two elements took the form of a slab of foam and a drill, used in a long process of trial and error to determine which depths and densities achieved the optimum level of cushioning and comfort. Engineers then took what they learned and applied the data through computational design scripts. The result was a new articulation of Nike’s React technology, highlighted by a patterned midsole illustrating where the drill experiments had realized the aforementioned different densities, now perfectly scaled to every shoe size.

As for the upper, it’s constructed from a translucent TPE yarn textile, with eye-stay detailing and a heel clip inspired by earlier Nike designs, including the Internationalist.

The Nike Element React 87 will launch June 21st through SNKRS in Asia, Latin America and Greater China, and SNEAKRS in Europe and select retailers. A North American release follows on July 13 via SNKRS select retailers.

Release Dates:
6/21/18 (Thursday) – Asia, Latin America, Greater China, Europe
7/13/18 (Friday) – North America
