Virgil Abloh & Nike Officially Their Footwear Collection, “The Ten”

Image via: Nike

Image via: Nike

The ambitious design project began in October 2016, when OFF-WHITE mastermind Virgil Abloh visited Nike’s world headquarters in Oregon. “By the time I made my first trip to Beaverton, I immediately wanted to make something,” Abloh says. “I didn’t wait all those years just to have meetings at Nike.” During that visit, he used an X-ACTO knife to rebuild a pair of all-black Air Force 1s, drawing on them with markers and ultimately creating one-offs for his staff to wear at that December’s Design Miami/, where he presented OFF-WHITE furniture.

That reconstructed design language would inform the resulting collection dubbed The Ten, a collaborative exploration of ten Nike (and one Converse) footwear silhouettes. Those ten shoes would be divided into two themes. The first, “REVEALING,” is designed to look accessible, featuring hand-cut, open-source and reconstructed builds. Those silhouettes take the form of the Air Jordan I, Nike Air Max 90, Nike Air Presto, Nike Air VaporMax and Nike Blazer Mid.
The second, “GHOSTING,” carries a common translucent upper that unite the following silhouettes: the Converse Chuck Taylor, Nike Zoom Fly SP, Nike Air Force 1 Low, Nike React Hyperdunk 2017 and Nike Air Max 97.

Check out all ten collaborations in the gallery below, and expect the first five icons of The Ten — the Air Jordan I, Nike Blazer, Nike Air Presto, Nike Air Max 90 and Nike Air VaporMax — to have a pre-release launch at NikeLab stores in New York City (Sept. 9-13), London (Sept. 18-22), Milan (Sept. 21-25) and Paris (Sept. 26-30).

The full collection will be available in November at NikeLab stores and select retailers worldwide.

Nike Air VaporMax “Triple White” // First Look

Although we’ve already seen multiple iterations of the Nike Air VaporMax in black and grey, we haven’t truly seen the model adorn an all-white theme. Well, it looks as if said pair is finally in the works.

Dressed in pristine white Flyknit with tonal branding, the shoe sits above a translucent cloud-like outer that deviates from the triple white look up top, but certainly looks better than if the Air unit were colored in one manner or another.

Stay tuned for release details on this upcoming Nike Air VaporMax “Triple White” in the weeks to come.

The Shoe Surgeon Gives the Air Jordan 13 a Premium Python Makeover

In honor of the return of the “Bred” colorway of the Air Jordan 13, which hits stores tomorrow, Jordan Brand invited the Shoe Surgeon to conduct a private session at the brand’s South State St. store in Chicago. There, in front of a captive audience, the L.A.-based sneaker customizer deconstructed and subsequently reconstructed a pair of the Air Jordan 13 “Bred,” with the finished product featuring luxurious python paneling and contrasting red suede trim. Continue reading for an interview with the Shoe Surgeon himself, in which he describes his relationship with the AJ13, and scroll through images from the event in the gallery below.

You work with so many different types of shoes – high end, low end, different brands. What makes the AJ 13 unique?

Everything from the design, to the padding, to the binding and how the eyelets are laced. One of my favorite parts of the 13 is the hologram. I feel like this is one of the first soles that had a suede cover. I think that was very unique for the time as well.

When you have shoes that are almost architecturally built, inspired by anything from a lawnmower to a cat’s paw, do you see that in the construction compared to other shoes?

I definitely do. From the first Jordan I ever did. It’s always just been about how many pieces and how it’s layered. Like you said, it’s more of an architectural way to approach a sneaker.

What was challenging about the 13?

This was probably one of the most difficult shoes I’ve done just because of all the detail already on the shoe – from the suede sole that could so easily be messed up, to the hologram, to the reflective fabric and the eyelets.

There are shortcuts I can take on other shoes to make things slightly different, or change a detail that no one would normally see, but for the AJ 13 the goal was to create it as closely as possible to the original.

Most Jordans are very complex, due to the design. I don’t think they take any shortcuts to make production easier. The focus was definitely on the design and how the shoe looks and functions rather than how inexpensive the production could be.

Vans Celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the Half Cab

Image via: Vans

Image via: Vans

This fall sees Vans celebrating 25 years of the iconic Half Cab, a shoe that was originally jury-rigged by street skaters from the early ’90s who manually chopped off the collar on their Vans Caballeros. Vans would go on to accommodate those proactive fans by introducing the Half Cab pro mode in 1992, and the SoCal brand is honoring the silver anniversary of the shoe with two tonal colorways — one in silver, appropriately enough, and the other in black. Both feature a full suede build with “XXV” embroidered on the heel. ULTRACUSH HD sockliners and DURACAP reinforced underlays round out the details. The kicks are available now at select Vans retailers and vans.com.
