Klay Thompson’s New “Gold Blooded” Anta KT3 Celebrate Ring Night & #ChinaKlay

words & images // Nick DePaula:

When Klay Thompson takes the floor tonight, he’ll be donning a gold knit edition of his Anta KT3 signature model, but it won’t be the first time you’ve seen the shoe.

Thanks in part to a viral video shot during the Golden State Warriors’ recent pre-season trip to China, Klay sprawled out in a bathtub with thirty pairs of the “Gold Blooded” KT3 and sunglasses on — and didn’t even have to say a single word. As the story goes, in vintage China Klay fashion, Anta reps pulled up to his hotel room with sneakers and shot the quick video on the spot.

Beyond just the dominant gold colorway honoring the team’s “Ring Night” later this evening, you’ll find several more subtle details throughout the new KT3 sneaker. A more technically advanced and nuanced design than his first two models, Klay’s third shoe features a protective high-cut collar. The adjustable strap is inspired by ancient Chinese warrior armor, linking the brand’s regional history with Thompson’s team. The outsole of the shoe incorporates a fingerprint pattern, driven by Klay’s sharpshooting on the court and quick release from his fingertips.

Check out the “Gold Blooded” Anta KT3 in detail below, in Klay’s exact size 15. Only 100 pairs will go on sale in China this Saturday, October 22nd, and yes, that means some lucky customers will get pairs that were featured in Klay’s instant classic bathtub video.

A-COLD-WALL* Puts Its Spin on the Nike Air Force 1

Image via: Nike

Image via: Nike

Through his London-based label A-COLD-WALL*, fashion wunderkind Samuel Ross injects elements of both Savile Row tailoring and streetwear energy to the everyday uniform of the British working class. That sense of juxtaposition is present in the brand’s upcoming Nike collaboration on the Air Force 1, which is deconstructed and reduced to bring attention to the silhouette’s distinct parts. The Nike AF1 A-COLD-WALL* sees subtle shifts in color from grey to white by reversing leathers, while the majority of the eyelets are removed and the signature Swoosh is stripped, leaving just the stitched outline behind. The Nike AF1 A-COLD-WALL* will be available starting October 21st exclusively at the A-COLD-WALL* pop-up in London. Look for the pop-up address to be announced via A-COLD-WALL*’s Instagram later this week.

Look Back At The Best Stance x NBA On-Court Socks

words: Ray P.

Today we welcome a new NBA Season and it’s an exciting time for both the teams and spectators alike. Not only do we get to see the best athletes from around the world compete, but we also get to rep our squad with amazing gear made by different sportswear brands the NBA has partnered with. In the past two years, professional basketball saw a lot of flavor added to the court as Stance landed an unprecedented deal to be the brand that makes on-court socks for the players and off-court socks for the fans. Stance is known for changing the sock game with their colorful motifs and incredible sports storytelling.

About a half decade ago, Stance unveiled its first collection of NBA socks. These socks, which were limited to select boutiques only and hard to get, featured sublimated images of NBA legends. Safe to say, the Stance x NBA collabo popped off. Over the course of the next few years, while popularizing legends and team socks, Stance was working behind the scenes with the NBA to secure the rights to the NBA on-court socks.

That, eventually, came to fruition. And Stance performance basketball socks became a thing, as NBA players took the court in them during the 2015-16 and 2016-17 seasons.

Now, with Nike on court, Stance is doubling down on their efforts to propel NBA casual, fan and lifestyle socks to the next frontier. There are new NBA player collections, team logo and legend packages in the works.

So stay tuned, cause Stance x NBA is just beginning.
— Tzvi “T” Twersky / Director of Licensed Sports, Stance

Before the new season kicks off with all Nike gear on-court, Nice Kicks wanted to look back at the past two years and recognize some of the best Stance x NBA socks seen throughout the league.

KOBE DAY

Giving one of the GOATs flowers while he can still smell them. No final season shook up the world more than Kobe Bryant’s since Michael Jordan and Stance was sure to honor the Black Mamba correct.

This limited-edition collection launched three styles only to sell out immediately, was replenished later and sold out again. Both numbers 24 & 8 were honored as Bryant was great in both eras.

The socks were originally only intended to be worn once in the NBA, on the March 6 game against the Warriors. The reaction was so stellar, though, that the Los Angeles Lakers decided to wear them again for the season finale/Kobe’s finale. This is the first piece of on-court apparel worn that honored a current player (and not a retired one).

For Stance, this was a really exciting project to work on for a number of reasons. Namely, the idea was brought to them very late in their process, so they had to make this happen on a very protracted calendar. It pushed Stance to and even past their limits—all in the name of a great design, exceptional sock and unforgettable moment.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2016

Worn on-court in the NBA in 2016 for Martin Luther King Day, Stance created a banger for BHM not only stylistically, but also for what it represents. The socks were worn with all different types of sneakers and it looked amazing on everyone.

You know a design is awesome and holds cultural significance when LeBron James, one of the world’s biggest athletes who gives back to his community as well as speaks up for social injustice including Black Lives Matters, wears it. This is one of the few rare occasions you can spot King James in special event socks because he usually sports a unique custom made fit engineered by Stance and himself.

TIM DUNCAN DAY

21 21 21! Tim Duncan low-key had one of the greatest careers of all time and that’s exactly how he wanted it to be. With authenticity being very important to Stance, they kept things simple with a patch of Duncan’s number on a pair of black and white socks– it looked clean, too.

The limited-edition socks were only available to players and fans at the arena that night on December 18th, 2016. Coach Popovich personally OK’d this project and design.

“As we all know, the Spurs do everything with a purpose. They talk, they practice, they play…with a purpose. They don’t waste any movement or do anything extraneous. That extends to their wardrobe and, so, we kept that in mind with these socks. Instead of trying to be extra, we kept it simple and just added a “21” patch to an existing striped style. A simple—and perfect—way to honor The Big Fundamental.” — Stance Hoops

NEW YORK KNICKS CORE

New York merchandise is always hot, but during the 2016-17 season the Knicks saw their core socks rise to become one of the most popular styles Stance Hoops offered. While simple in design, yet stylishly effective, these socks were worn on-court often and early by the Knicks and their unicorn Rookie Kristaps Porzingis who brought new energy to the team. Unlike other Stance socks, the NY Knicks Core sock was uniquely designed to have the NY stand alone unlike other team socks which have Stance and NBA logos embroidered on the back.

JUST DON x NBA ALL-STAR 2016

Is his name King Midas or Don C? Because everything he touches is gold. This collaboration was a limited-edition halo piece that complimented the inline All-Star Game socks. These pushed the limit of what you can do on a sock, and also—with hearts on it—pushed NBA design past anywhere it had ever been before given their usual strict limitations.

When Stance left these in the locker room for the players, they were put in a box specially designed for the occasion, along with a matching Just Don Valentine Day hat. For months, you could see guys—Dwade, James Harden, Andre Drummond, etc.—rocking those hats.

Working along side Stance in the design process, Don C is recognized as a great designer, an innovator, and, best of all, a great person. He was responsible for the concept of marrying Valentine’s Day and All-Star Weekend, since they coincided. The added touch, another first, was each pair of socks had an individual number on the bottom out of 500.

MILWAUKEE BUCKS LOGO QTR

New logo who dis? The Bucks have the most slept-on sock in the NBA and uniforms. With Giannis leading the way, those boys will be a nightmare on the court for opponents and they’ll do so in style.

“As the Bucks embraced a new uniform and identity, we did our part and tried tying the whole kit together at the foot. This design, from a technical perspective, is difficult and is a testament to our impressive design and product teams.” — Stance Hoops

PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS “RIP CITY”

Stance honoring the nickname of the Blazers on a sock is pretty amazing. If you’re a fan of Portland, this is a must cop pair. It holds historical value dating back to 1971 as play-by-play announcer Bill Schonely shouted out, “RIP CITY! All right!” during an ill-advised long distance made field goal (in the pre-three point line era).

This is a dope sock, but very slept-on because the Blazers were one of the few teams that preferred black and white socks for the most part, so fans didn’t really get a chance to see these enough. The RIP CITY design is printed, not knit like most STANCE NBA socks, via a dope process the production team innovated.

RAPTORS THROWBACK “TORONTO HUSKIES”

The Toronto Raptors threw it back to 1947, way before your time and my time with this uniform. Yet another sock from Stance and the NBA that holds historical value. We could argue the socks made the jerseys look way better every time they were worn together. This was one of the most inspired and well-worn designs. Just peep how it looks on DeMar’s feet.

“This sock, as you can see, took the most creative liberty and, in turn, turned out as one of the standouts. Thanks to the Raptors, for giving us such dope material to work with, and thank our design and print team for turning up!” — Stance Hoops

Fun Fact: The Toronto Huskies only were together for one season in 1946-47 for the BAA, a league that became before the NBA, before disbanding.

SOLID QTR – “Black” & “White”

The traditional sock with NBA logo will forever be a staple in sportswear fashion thanks to Michael Jordan. Before Stance came around, NBA socks were hard to come by. Now, you can actually buy the NBA socks the athletes wear. However, quarter length NBA Logo socks were still exclusive to athletes and not available the public in the 2015-16 season. They were so fire on-court, though.

After much demand, Stance listened to the kids and in 2016-17 launched the quarter length sock, which became one of the best selling socks at all channels of retail. That was a great decision.

NUGGETS CORE

Another fan favorite sock as the design is really cool, but credit also goes to Denver having really loyal fans. They are so loyal, people posted some amazing pictures on IG of this sock—which illustrate the mountains of Colorado—while hiking the mountains! You have to respect a sock designed for Basketball that transcends outside of the court.

NBA RISING STARS

Give it up to The Boy. With the 2016 NBA All-Star game being held in Toronto, Drake’s OVO Raptors jerseys served as the inspiration for this stellar pair of socks that sold out on Stance.com instantly! Although this sock had no OVO branding, many Drake fans count it as merch that needed to be owned for their collection.

NBA players such as Karl Anthony Towns, Kristaps Porzingis, and more were spotted wearing this sock during the Rising Stars Challenge along with an array of dope kicks on court.

CHINESE NEW YEAR COLLECTION

Limited-edition and only available in select local markets. This was a hit with players and fans as they looked fire both on and off-court. The CYN collection was one of the few special event socks the Warriors embraced and wore. The Warriors, Raptors, Wizards, and Rockets sported their socks on-court as well.

This is the first time Steph Curry wore the calf length crew sock from Stance. Traditionally, Curry chose to wear the quarter length socks throughout the season which would be hidden under his ankle braces. Stance selected CYN teams who have previously honored Chinese culture and have massive dedicated fan bases in the easter hemisphere. — Stance

CAVS LOGO

Love ’em, or hate ’em, the Cavs have some pretty sick uniform colors– Wine, Gold, Navy. Whichever color combination you choose it’s going to look good. One can argue Stance made the some of the best kits for LeBron and company. The primarily navy pair sports yellow accents and wine colored stripes while the Cavs Logo is featured on the back side. This is a case of a simple sock done well.

You can shop the full range of Stance x NBA On-Court socks for only online.

Nike Kyrie 3 “Shamrock” PE // Preview

Returning to Cleveland tonight to face off against the Cavaliers, Kyrie Irving showed off a player exclusive edition of his own Nike Kyrie 3 at Boston’s morning shootaround. And quite fittingly for his regular season debut with the Celtics, Irving’s PE has a shamrock theme to them.

The Nike Kyrie 3 “Shamrock” features a jet black upper with a pattern of the Celtics’ shamrock logo prominently featured on the toe box. A translucent outsole and gold Swoosh logos finish the look.

“One thing I can credit myself for is the creativity I have in my shoes so I was excited to make these debuts,” Irving said about his shoes (via ESPN’s Chris Forsberg).

Peep photos of the Nike Kyrie 3 PE “Shamrock” below and look for Irving to lace them up against the Cavs.

PUMA’s 50th Anniversary Suede Campaign Stars Olympic Hero Tommie Smith

Yesterday marked an almost half century anniversary of one of the most impactful moments in sports history. Olympic gold medal sprinter, Tommie Smith, alongside John Carlos and the late but certainly not forgotten Peter Norman, made a towering stand for equality at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City.

Smith and Carlos, aiming to bring awareness to the many injustices hindering people of color, with heads bowed and black fist raised, delivered a powerful message on the grandest stage that still resonates today. Norman, also on the stand as the silver medalist Australian sprinter, stood in solidarity while also wearing a pin on his left breast that read “Olympic Project for Human Rights.” Time momentarily stood still during this moment on October 16, 1968.

PUMA Suede

One year prior, in 1967, PUMA introduced the Suede – largely their most famous shoe to date. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, and the famous men and women who’ve aligned with PUMA over the years like Tommie Smith, the famed Olympic hero is the centerpiece of their new campaign.

Smith was critical in helping shape the Suede into the icon it is today. Although he didn’t wear the shoe on the track in 1968 as he wore spikes, he carried a Suede out to the medal stand prior to his courageous stance of activism.

The 50th anniversary PUMA Suede campaign begins with Smith and continues through OG releases, new colorways, collaborations and more. The releases will begin on November 4 at select PUMA stores.

Paul Pierce Talks Making Amends with Ray Allen, Celtic Sneaker Wars & Loving the Nike PG1

After 19 Hall of Fame NBA seasons, 2008 Finals MVP and Boston Celtics second all-time leading scorer in franchise history, Paul Pierce, begins the second chapter of his illustrious career – as an NBA Analyst for ESPN. Pierce, retiring after the close of the 2016-17 season, will now appear on ESPN’s The Jump and NBA Countdown pre-game and halftime shows through the course of the season.

The Kansas Jayhawks product with roots in Inglewood, California, can’t remember a time when basketball wasn’t at the center of his life. After entering the NBA in 1998 as a lottery pick to the Celtics, Pierce was a perennial All-Star before teaming with Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen during the 2007-08 season that resulted in an NBA championship. But after a stint in Brooklyn alongside Garnett with the Nets, then in Washington with the Wizards and Los Angeles with the Clippers — nearly two decades of getting buckets — “The Truth” is trading in his uniform for a suit; a job for which he’s proven his worth over the last two years sitting in with the ESPN crew during their NBA Finals coverage.

During a media conference call for the network, the first in which Pierce has participated, he discussed how different his Boston “Big Three” is from the modern-day version featuring Kyrie Irving, Gordon Hayward and Al Horford.

“Our situation was unique,” Pierce said of his experience. “We came together and did it in one year even though we had all new faces. That’s hard to do.” Chemistry, and health, are critical even when you have three All-Stars. Pierce said that he was lucky to have the team he did, which is why when recently in Japan at the same time with former teammate Ray Allen, the two talked and made amends after a pretty public fallout due to Allen leaving the team for greener pastures to play alongside LeBron James and Chris Bosh in Miami.

“I just saw an opportunity, when I was able to see him, to kind of bury the hatchet, put it all behind us.” More than just teammates, Pierce is happy to again have a relationship with someone he has long considered a good friend. “I was just excited because the funny thing, our families, our wives still have a relationship, and our kids — you know, we did things together with our kids. So it was more than just a working relationship. We were all like brothers and friends, and it was just like, you know what, I’m pretty much over it.”

The new look Celtics are heavy favorites to challenge the Cavaliers for the Eastern Conference crown, largely due to aforementioned newcomers Irving and Hayward. Pierce says he believes they’ll have a great shot, much of which he says won’t be solely based on basketball but friendship. He reminisced on his good old days in Boston and the sneaker wars with his All-Star riddled cast. ” I was on a team that had probably like three or four guys with their own signature shoe. And that’s something we used to compare. I remember us comparing our shoes every All-Star — me, Rondo, Kevin, and Ray. We always took pictures of our shoes. So everybody would post a picture of the shoes up. It was a lot of fun, man.”

Pierce, a longtime Swoosh faithful, wore Nike throughout his years at Kansas and of course his own shoes as a professional – the Nike Air Max P and Air Legacy respectively. Nowadays he’s very much a fan of both the Nike PG1 and the Nike Kyrie 3. “I like Paul George’s shoe. I got a couple pair of those already. I like his shoe. Or the Kyrie Irving signature. I like Kyrie’s shoes a lot too.”

Paul Pierce

Be sure to catch Paul Pierce this Wednesday, October 18, during ESPN’s season-opening doubleheader starting with the Philadelphia 76ers vs. the Washington Wizards at 7pm ET, followed by the Minnesota Timberwolves vs. the San Antonio Spurs at 9:30pm ET.
