Newly Tooled adidas Yeezy 700 in “Utility Black” Has Emerged

Less than 24 hours after Kanye West revealed new iterations of the Yeezy Boost 350 v2, Yeezy 500 and the upcoming Yeezy basketball shoe, the often unseen, newly re-tooled Yeezy 700 appears in a “Utility Black” colorway.

With a varying midsole that tracks wider than the original, the sloped upper of this 700 is slightly more slanted as opposed to the retail debut. A combination of suede and leather fabrication adorn the modern-day “dad shoe” which comes retro-fitted in a weathered aesthetic.

Kanye West has been on a tear lately and it’s poised to be another huge year for brand Yeezy. Stay tuned for more details on the upcoming adidas Yeezy 700 “Utility Black” release.

Time Names Virgil Abloh One of its Most Influential People of 2018

Virgil Abloh, the newly appointed Louis Vuitton Menswear Artistic Director, can now add another title to his expansive multi hyphenate. Time magazine this week named the Chicago native one of its most influential people of 2018.

A collective that features the likes of President Trump, Prince Harry, Oprah Winfrey, Rihanna, Cardi B and many, many others, Abloh makes the list for the very first time as a trailblazing pioneer in the world of style and design. Abloh’s inclusion is unique in that streetwear – or sneaker culture – isn’t typically represented on this annual list. But as it continues to merge closer with high fashion and the line between the two is all but buried under the sand, Virgil represents the new-school changing of the guard. And while he’s not nearly the first designer to make the Time list, he is one of the few African-American males to make the cut.

His brand, OFF WHITE, alongside his partnership with Nike and impending Louis Vuitton collection, are just a few of the things Virgil is known for. Before his name rang louder than most, Abloh was widely known for his role as Kanye West’s Creative Director. He’s also a dj who’s played all over the world.

More intimately, and what makes this news so incredible, is that Virgil despite his long list of accolades is one of the most relatable creatives of our time. To tap into that, and the vision that sets him apart, famed Japanese artist and friend of Abloh, Takashi Murakami, wrote a short story about his endearing friend.

“A little over 10 years ago, Virgil Abloh, relatively fresh out of graduate school, visited my office in Tokyo while working with Kanye West. I had no way of recognizing the shy youth’s talents that were to blossom in the years to come.”

Murakami went on to talk about working with Virgil, his character, and his influence on youth culture. “Kids’ fervor for the stripe patterns and arrow marks he created for his fashion label, Off-White, is not a passing trend; rather, it shows how Virgil’s young followers, with their unclouded eyes, have been seeing right into the core of his creativity all along. With his appointment as artistic director for Louis Vuitton’s menswear, his full merit will be understood even more widely around the globe.”

Abloh’s first Louis Vuitton collection is set to debut later this year. Additionally, new releases from “The Ten” with Nike are also scheduled throughout 2018.

Chris Paul Discusses His New Jordan CP3.11 & PJ Tucker’s Insane Collection

words & interview // Nick DePaula:

When a superstar athlete finds something that works on the floor, it can be hard to get them to switch things up.

That’s been the case for Chris Paul and his longtime Jordan Brand signature series. Every shoe has been a beast on the hardwood to hoop in, and CP3 has loved every last element of the line’s performance. From the 5/8th collar height, to the wrapping forefoot grip along the inner toe, the no-frills traction setup and forefoot Zoom Air — there’s been a formula in place that simply worked.

The footwear has helped fuel him all this time in the Association, and after nine All-Star nods and nine All-Defensive team namings, Paul was finally looking to shift things up, even if ever so slightly. The newest addition to his signature series — he’s only the 6th athlete to have 10+ consecutive signature models — looks to take all of the best cues and touches of his sneakers to date, while adding even more support and control.

Partly inspired by a cult classic-slash-point guard’s favorite from over  a decade ago — the Nike Air Jet Flight — Paul looked to add a lockdown strap to his eleventh signature model, harnessing his every step through what he’s hoping will be a deep postseason run here this spring.

We recently caught up with CP3 to hear all about his latest shoe, his first season in Houston, and of course, some of his favorite sneakers off the court. Check out the full conversation below, and let us know your thoughts on his new Jordan CP3.11 on Twitter.

Nick DePaula: The CP3.11 — crazy to say to we’re on the 11 now — what were some of the biggest things you were looking for on the design to switch it up this time around?

Chris Paul: The thing that I was most excited about was the strap. For years, and awhile ago on the 3s, I wanted a strap on my shoe, but we couldn’t do it at the time. I’m excited about the strap, and I’m excited about the “rocket fuel” energy shoe that we dropped. I’m sure you know a lot about sneakers, how different things work and how far in advance you have to do it. Pushing the release date back on my shoe actually worked out perfect, in that me being traded, it would’ve sucked coming out with a shoe in Clippers colors. You know what I mean? [laughs]

NDP: That definitely would’ve been awkward. [laughs] But, you guys have to work over a year in advance usually, so that’s part of the process. What’s it like being one of only two players with his own Jordan signature shoe now?

CP: It’s such an honor and a privilege. We all know what the brand stands for – it stands for excellence. For me, I love sneakers and the whole process of it. The thing that I’ve enjoyed over the years learning and trying to get better at is telling stories. When you design anything, it’s all about telling your story. That’s why the brand is what it is. That’s why MJ is who he is. When you think about the 1s and the “Banned” story, the 3s and the 11s, all of those different shoes tell different stories.

NDP: Definitely, and from JMay back in the day to Justin Taylor now, how has the process of working on your shoe changed over the years? How many times do you meet in person, and do you guys do FaceTime, texts or emails too now?

CP: It’s constant. Not only with JT, but with Jamaal Lucas at the brand too. My brother is also always involved, and it’s so collaborative. Obviously FaceTime helps, but they come down and see me too. They always come down during the summer when I have my youth camp, and they’ll show the kids what we’re working on. I’ll see those guys when I go to Portland, and then we’ll group talk year around. It’s not just a one time thing. That’s what’s cool about it. We can always think about the process of it and because we have that relationship – we can be honest about what we like or don’t like.

NDP: That’s great to hear. I know you guys have all gotten super close, and I remember Jamaal was joking about how you had pulled up to one of his Portland city league games to watch, and he felt like he had a little bit of extra pressure.

CP: Definitely! [laughs] That’s the thing with being with the brand. It’s like a real family, and it’s bigger than just the shoes.

NDP: Tell me about the Adjust Force and Jet Flight inspiration, which I found super interesting. What was it about some of those older shoes that helped to shape the 11 here?

CP: I’m sitting here laughing, because a lot of people don’t know about the Jet Flight. I was in high school, and I used to wear those shoes. I remember going on Eastbay, and they were like .99 at one point, and I was trying to get every color. They were just so lightweight, and I loved that shoe. Steve Nash wore ’em for a long time, and Luke Ridnour wore that shoe too.

NDP: In LA with the Clippers you of course had Blake [Griffin] also with Jordan — now in Houston, you got James with his huge Adidas deal. Do you and James ever get into any Jumpman vs. Three Stripes arguments or debates?

CP: He’ll come in with some pair of Adidas and I might have some Js on, and he’ll mess with me and say, “Ughhh!” [laughs] The cool part too is we both got AAU programs, and of course with grassroots basketball, there’s different circuits. You’ve got the Nike / Jordan circuit, you’ve got the Adidas circuit and you’ve got the Under Armour circuit. One thing we’ve talked about is getting our teams together to play against eachother.

Chris Paul & PJ Tucker’s insane locker room stash, which is constantly .

NDP: Another teammate of yours that’s been wearing crazy sneakers all year is of course PJ Tucker. He said he even caught Michael by surprise in Charlotte when he wore a pair of Shawn Marion 5 PEs. Which pairs has PJ worn that grabbed your attention?

CP: It catches me by surprise with some of the shoes that he’ll play in. I don’t ever really get surprised by seeing that he got a shoe. He has guys’ PEs and has a crazy collection of Brons and a crazy collection of Jordans. He’ll be in some shoes, and it’s like, “You done lost your mind.” [laughs] You know the sole is coming off those – why are you even trying? [laughs]

NDP: PJ told a story about how he tracked down and bought a pair of the navy suede Jeter 11s, which are super rare of course. And then he said you casually wore your own pair into the locker room a few days later. What are some PEs you’ve got that you’ve been most excited about lately?

CP: I’m a big fan of the 11s. I love the 4s, the 3s and the Jordan 1 is my favorite of all time. I just love the 1. A shoe that I think is slept on a lot is the 23s. Not only the design, but I actually played in those in the ’08 Olympics. The story behind the 23, and a lot of people forget about MJ’s thumbprint that’s behind the tongue. Every time you pull the tongue up, you feel like you’re MJ for a second. That’s the stuff that I pay attention to.

NDP: That was one of my favorite Jordans to play in for sure, with the full-length Zoom on top of the IPS, and then the support was great. I remember you had some really clean PEs when you were on the Hornets, with the teal.

CP: Yeah!

NDP: That’ll be a fun one to bring back when they decide to. Do you have anything special planned for the CP3 11 for the playoffs?

CP: I got some fun ones coming out around the playoffs and through the summer. A few shoes paying homage to some of my favorite TV shows and stuff like that. I probably can’t tell you everything, but we got some fun stuff coming.

NDP: Outside of your own line, what’s your favorite Air Jordan sneaker of all time from when you were growing up? Is it still the 13?

CP: The 13 is one of my favorite shoes because of the story behind it. When I was in the 6th grade, I was playing after school intramurals, and I came back to my locker and my shoes were gone. That was the first day that I wore them to school — and I didn’t get another pair of 13s until my fourth year in the NBA. [laughs]

NDP: What sneakers are in your current rotation off the court?

CP: I love the new Jordan Trainer Flyknit, with the strap. I love anything with Flyknit just to wear around. The 11 Lows, I wear those some. The Kaws 4s. Depending on where I’m going, I wear 1s. If I’m going to dinner, I’ll wear 1s. That’s probably the model I have most — I got 1s for days. [laughs]

NDP: Last question for you man — what are some upcoming launches that you’re most excited about?

CP: You tell me first —

NDP: Well, I think a lot of people are looking forward to what more the brand does with Virgil here after the 1s launched, and I’m also looking forward to seeing what you guys are able to do with Don C.

CP: Man, me too, and Don’s got a few sick ones coming out! When you’re over on the fourth floor of the MJ Building on campus, man, he’s got some sick colorways of that shoe!

adidas Yung-1 Beige/White Lands This Summer

Adidas has been rich with new silhouettes over the last half decade. Dating back to 2014, they entered their current renaissance with the ZX Flux. In the years that would follow, things would only get better as adidas would debut the Ultra Boost and NMD. During that time they also famously partnered with Kanye West, Pharrell Williams and NIGO.

What might resonate with consumers for adidas in 2017? By most accounts it’s this summer’s Yung-1. A modern-day iteration of the Falcon Dorf, the Yung-1 was first seen in this Beige/White colorway before Navy/Red and orange colorways emerged. All are due out this summer yet it’s unclear when this particular pair is set to hit retailers.

Take an official look at the adidas Yung-1 Beige/White and stay tuned for release details.

What’s In Their Wardrobe? // John Elliott

Just a few years after launching his acclaimed elevated basics brand, John Elliott has set out to bridge the gap between streetwear and sophisticated essentials. Turning heads on the apparel front since the brand’s first official launch in 2013, Elliott is now getting the conversation going on the footwear side with several renditions of his co-branded Nike Vandal and the upcoming dad shoe variations with his Fall 2018 collection.

Living up to his motto of “You always want the look to be believable,” John Elliott does exactly that. Everything he wears from his brand’s line is exactly something you’d expect him to wear. The California native aims to symbolize a place where summer never really ends with his offerings, reflecting the stories that influenced his style growing up. Overall, John Elliott’s style is very simple, which if you’re anything like him, that makes getting dressed very easy in the morning. And furthermore, if you’re style is reminiscent of his, you know exactly where you can get what he’s sporting.

Basically, it’s All About the Basics

For the most part, John Elliott is basically all about the basics because it’s the essentials that can withstand the trends. Elliott believes that a leather perfecto jacket is a good investment to always be stylish and something you’ll more than likely have forever. Need further validation? LeBron has been seen dozens of times wearing John Elliott head to toe with the perfecto jacket as the statement piece before game-time.

JE also claims that the brand’s dual-zip hoodie is one of his own as well as his team’s favorite pieces and offers plenty of versatility for how it can be worn. Also jumping on the layering trend early, the brand has offered a series of longline essentials and slim-cut sweats that showcase a timeless and casual look. Elliott’s product line looks simple, but when it is worn together, it is meant to look even stronger.

A leather jacket is a wardrobe staple that will literally last you a lifetime. It never goes out of style and you don’t have to keep up with the trends.

Play Your Style Wildcard

Even though John Elliott keeps it relatively simple, there are indeed those times where he has to play his style wildcard. What’s cool about Elliott is that he keeps most of his look the exact same as he would otherwise, except he’ll replace one of the usual items with something unexpected to grab your attention. And even though it’s unexpected it’s still believable. A prime example would be JE’s Nike collaboration with the Swoosh. Of all the silhouettes he could’ve chosen from, he picked the Vandal because it was his go-to shoe throughout high-school and college that offered the versatility for skating and playing basketball.

Building off those moments when JE plays his style wildcard, there are times when he even designs that way. During Paris Fashion week several months back, Elliott was spotted with his acclaimed Vandals, but this time he traded in his signature skinny jeans for a pair of white painter pants that were made to look worn-in. Pause and actually observe what’s going on and you might question what you see, but suddenly it grows on you and you can understand how it actually applies to the rest of his pairings.

The brand is best known for its renowned Villian hoodie, featuring a slim French terry construction with RiRi side zippers, this again was a point in menswear that Elliott and team played the style wildcard. JE has been quoted, “The market is open to new ideas; as a result, you get to explore.”

Can't top this. JE playing his style wildcard with painter pants and a topcoat for layering.

Double-Up on Denim

One of JE’s classic looks is his ability to wear denim on denim without veering off into Canadian tuxedo territory. How does he do this? Significant contrast. Usually layering a hoodie underneath, Elliott has frequently been seen with a light wash distressed denim jacket that’s paired with white jeans. Afraid white jeans are too trendy for you? The John Elliott brand has plenty of washes that rough up the tone’s neatness, appearing with a worn-in streetwear edge. Elliott’s way of wearing double denim also makes it even easier to pick out sneakers since they’ll essentially go with everything, like Old Skools, Common Projects, and Air Force 1s.

John Elliott has some of the most unique denim washes that anyone on the market has to offer and he’s consistently able to mix up the ways in how different shades and distressing can be applied. JE’s denim range stems from his early days of picking up well faded pairs from APC’s Butler Program, which sells pre-worn raw denim from its customers who bring in faded pairs in exchange for 50% off a new pair. The washes that Elliott offers mirror the fades, honeycombs, whiskering, and rips that APCs take on with prolonged wear, only his take on this sort of character right from the start.
