Nike Mercurial Boot Timeline

Nike’s Mercurial Boot has been the staple silhouette of Swoosh soccer since 1998, with the original silhouette pictured. Two years before its rollout, Nike linked up with the Brasilian National Team and created a new cleat for the World Cup’s all-time leading goal scorer, Ronaldo. The young striker would attack the goal and completely change gears with his target in sight, ultimately inspiring the name Mercurial. Over the next 16 years, Nike Mercurial boots would use an array of technologies to lead the charge in soccer’s lightweight movement that focused on pure speed. Now one of the premier cleats for this year’s World Cup 2014, the Nike Mercurial Vapor Superfly IV marks the current state of the boot series.
