Today, the world lost a true original. Adam Yauch, better known as MCA of the Beastie Boys, passed away. His time on the earth was short, but his impact on the hip-hop culture was huge. A founding member of the New York trio, the group broke the rules of rap before they were written. In a genre historically known as a young man’s game, the Beasties would drop #1 albums in three different decades. While current artists still catch flak for crossover attempts, they’d take home Grammys in Rap, Alternative, and Pop categories. Sell out? Never. The band big enough to tour the continent with Madonna was good enough to follow it up with a Five-Mic album. Such an achievement points to feet firmly planted in hip-hop, and such feet were laced in adidas.
In 1987’s video for “No Sleep Till Brooklyn”, the Boys stay in the Stripes. MCA and Mike D can be seen wearing the White/Grey and “Olympic” colorways of the Conductor Hi, while Ad-Rock dons the navy suede Campus. RIP MCA and big ups to the Beasties.
