Kim Jones Refines Soccer Kits Through Nike “Football Reimagined” Collection

Soccer is a game built on tradition and custom. Dating back centuries, soccer has long been a game played around the world. Where several other major sports were compartmentalized to certain regions before attaining global fame, soccer has always been a worldly pleasure.

Designer Kim Jones understands the rich history of the sport exceptionally well. It’s one of the reasons why with his new collaborative collection with Nike, he’s chosen to disrupt it.

Jones’ “Football Reimagined” collection — releasing in accordance with the start of the 2018 FIFA World Cup — facilitates foundational sporting garments seen through a crystallized fashion lens. Retooling jerseys, shorts and pre-match jackets, Jones leans heavily on cut to remaster the antiquated fit of the soccer kit.

New sizing with mastered proportions drastically changes how the body appears. Jones also uses this moment to embed symbolism into the collection, opting for subversion as opposed to ideology seen at the surface. The English designer looks no further than his home for inspiration, channelling London’s Kings Road by juxtaposing avant garde tailoring with contemporary sport tech.

“That whole punk era was all about proportions that gave power to the wearer,” Jones states. “I was inspired by the idea of DIY of the time — cutting up and putting things back together — to create something new.”

Where footwear is concerned, the Central St. Martins graduate looked to his favorite Swoosh silhouettes to inform the his Nike Air Max 360 Hi. “I was looking at the silhouette of the Mercurial along with my three favorite Nike shoes: The Footscape, the Vandal and the Air Max 97. Combining these into one shoe is an homage to punk, but with a super-slick end product,” Jones exclaimed.

The Kim Jones x Nike “Football Reimagined” Collection is set to release on June 7th at select retailers and on Nike.com.

Nike Officially Introduces OFF WHITE “Football, Mon Amour” Collection

Ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which begins in Russia on June 14, Nike officially announces a new leg of its thriving partnership with designer Virgil Abloh. The OFF WHITE founder has a deep-rooted affinity for soccer dating back to high school when he him played. Abloh would listen to his favorite hip hop songs en route to soccer matches. It’s memories like those that help inform this budding assortment of kits and sneakers.

Youthful memories pose as the soundtrack for the OFF WHITE x Nike “Football, Mon Amour” Collection. Juxtaposing lifestyle and sporting heritage, the offering is both visceral and cutting. Masterfully stated through traditional soccer graphics from time-honored European clubs, Abloh, in his own unique way, manages to reach back whilst remaining current. “I was always inspired by the way European teams have a sponsor printed over the chest,” Abloh recalls. “When I was working on this collection, I wanted to celebrate the different variants of typography.”

Numbers on each jersey harken back to Abloh’s playing days, and the numbers he wore while canvassing the pitch. Moreover, further ode to iconic soccer reference is seen through Czech strips and the clubs logo, a lion juggling dots.

The dots, of course, are a fixture on Abloh’s shoe — the OFF WHITE x Nike Zoom Fly Mercurial Flyknit. “I wanted to communicate where a player strikes the ball. So, I put dots on the boot; if you’re going to strike the ball, your foot/eye coordination is basically the only variance of chance. That’s what the collection started with, these running shoes that mimic the same as your actual boot on the pitch so that you started subconsciously training all the time. Then I just applied that aesthetic from the bottom up,” Virgil explained.

Abloh’s OFF WHITE x Nike “Football, Mon Amour” Collection drops on June 14th at select retailers globally and on Nike.com.

Union and Dickies Join Forces on a Workwear-Inspired Collection

Image via: Union

Image via: Union

Considering that Union owner Chris Gibbs has always worn Dickies, it’s no surprise that his store’s upcoming collaboration with the workwear label came about organically. “I met one of the dudes at Dickies and just started to volunteer some ideas cause I was so hyped on the brand,” says Gibbs. “He then invited me to do a collection and the rest is history.” The resulting capsule — dubbed “Get Off My Dickies” — makes use of Dickies’ signature cotton/nylon fabrication, finished in unexpected hues like pink and off-white. Traditional silhouettes, like woven shirts and cut-off work pants, are refashioned in oversized and boxy cuts, giving off a “self-affirmation vibe” that recalls ’90s fashion. The goods drop Saturday, June 2nd, at Union’s L.A. and Tokyo locations, as well as online at unionlosangeles.com.

Release Date: 6/2/18 (Saturday)
