converse canvas all star j hi ox Converse Canvas All Star J Hi + Ox

Converse is perhaps the quintessential All-American sneaker brand, but they’ve enjoyed tremendous popularity in Japan for quite some time.  The top-tier Addict series is exclusive to the Land of the Rising Sun, and while these newest releases aren’t part of that series, they do indeed reflect the meticulous craftsmanship that’s one of the nation’s hallmarks.  The Converse Canvas All Star J Hi and Ox bring forth two and three colorways, respectively, distinguished from the general releases by subtle lettering on the heel and insole.  Made in Japan and exclusive to nearby retailers, you can see more of these Chuck Taylors after the jump.

Covering all canvas, eyelets, laces and soles, they naturally crack and shed their outer coat of paint to reveal the original colors beneath.

Founded in 1988, Maison Martin Margiela is a fashion house which has always followed its own path, often outside the conventional fashion framework. Maison Martin Margiela’s collections are known for reinventing volumes, modifying shapes, and changing the original use and movement of garments, derailing the classic notions of fashion. Through recycling, transformation and reinterpretation, their identity aligns perfectly with Converse‘s philosophy of being a platform for creativity.

Converse First String Jack Purcell “Boro”

Inspired by Japanese tradition, the Converse First String Jack Purcell “Boro” is a piece of work. There is a longtime practice of art and technique in Japan where recycled cloth is used to produce completely new material, thus the concept behind these “Boro” Jack Purcells. With an upper completely composed of different patched-together textiles, this Converse pays tribute to the times when reusing and recycling materials was vital. Visible stitching adds detail, while a pure white toe box and midsole cleans everything up. This First String Jack Purcell “Boro” is available at select retailers today, so let us know if you’re opening a new tab to start searching for a pair in the comment section below.

A Closer Look at the Converse First String Jack Purcell “Boro”

Taking inspiration, and its name, from the Japanese age-old art and technique of recycling cloth to create an entirely new material, we’ve got a closer look at the Converse First String Jack Purcell “Boro” shoe. Built of an indigo patchwork composition for the upper, the pattern is a tribute to the days when reworking and recycling material scraps was an economically imposed necessity, with exposed stitching finishes and mis-matched fabric patterns further emphasizing the origins of the design technique. Fitted on Converse’s classic Jack Purcell silhouette, the “Boro” shoe is priced at $ 1,099 HKD (approximately $ 140 USD) and is set to be available at select retailers, including Hong Kong’s I.T., E.X.IT., and Juice on September 6.
