A Closer Look at the INVINCIBLE for Converse First String Jack Purcell Johnny

Today we present a closer look at the INVINCIBLE for Converse First String Jack Purcell Johnny. This special version of the high-top Jack Purcell features a premium upper composed of black suede, leather and leopard-print leather on the heel. Instead of going for a wild design, INVINCIBLE has opted to go for a subtle but premium makeover that speaks for itself. The addition of a zipper running down the length of the heel is a great touch and makes getting in and out of this shoe that much easier. Accompanying our closer look is a quick Q&A with Jimmy Wu, director of INVINCIBLE.
Can you introduce yourself and what you do?
My name is Jimmy. I’m the director of INVINCIBLE, Red Wing Shoes and Carhartt WIP for the Taiwan region.
What’s the story behind this collaboration?
INVINCIBLE has been carrying the Converse First String line for the past few years. Given the opportunity, it was only natural for INVINCIBLE to collaborate with Converse to create a shoe that we feel would make an impact in our market.
How would you describe INVINCIBLE’s approach to footwear design?
I wanted to create a shoe that is easily wearable and the subtle change is always within the details. By applying a mixture of premium fabrics and adding the zipper to the back, the shoe would look like an ordinary Jack Purcell Johnny at first glance. The idea is that the wearer would feel a sense of luxury and uniqueness when putting the shoes. I wanted a lot of the differences to be something only sneaker connoisseur would spot.
Why did you guys settle on the leopard pattern concept?
I feel that much like camo patterns, leopard print is a staple pattern that we will always see… We didn’t want to overdo it, and used just a hint of leopard print on the back of Jack Purcell Johnny silhouette. I believe this shoe will stand the test of time.
What are your thoughts on the current trends in footwear design?
I think the current trends is that the consumers are smarter and more knowledgable of the wide variety of sneakers around, thanks to the Internet. I believe hype will always be a factor that determines the sell-through, but when you have a design that pays attention to the quality and details, you will always find a solid group of people that will appreciate the effort.

NIKE, INC. Reports Fiscal 2014 First Quarter Results

nike-inc-reports-fiscal-2014-first-quarter-results

If there’s anything you need to know about Nike, Inc., it is that the company and brand is doing well and will continue to deliver on its promise to render the consumer innovative products and experience. As the brand has motivated and inspired millions, assisted in athletic development and growth, and revolutionized the running market with the all-new Nike Free Flyknit, it would only make sense that Nike yield positive results. To put things into perspective, Nike, Inc. has just announced it’s first quarter results:

  • Revenues from continuing operations up 8 percent to .0 billion
  • Diluted earnings per share from continuing operations up 37 percent to .86
  • Worldwide futures orders up 8 percent, 10 percent growth excluding currency changes
  • Inventories as of August 31, 2013 up 6 percent

BEAVERTON, Ore., September 26, 2013 – NIKE, Inc. (NYSE:NKE) today reported financial results for its fiscal 2014 first quarter ended August 31, 2013. Strong demand for NIKE, Inc. brands propelled revenue growth, and diluted earnings per share grew faster than revenue due to gross margin expansion, SG&A leverage, a lower tax rate and a lower average share count.

“We had a great first quarter driven by our unrelenting commitment to delivering innovative products and services to athletes around the world,” said Mark Parker, President and CEO of NIKE, Inc. “Our powerful portfolio of businesses combined with unmatched leadership and resources allows us to capitalize on opportunities that drive long-term value for our shareholders. I am more excited than ever about our potential to continue to innovate with purpose, and fuel NIKE’s growth.”*

First Quarter Continuing Operations Income Statement Review

Starting in the first quarter of fiscal 2014, the Company changed the reporting structure for what was historically identified as Other Businesses. Hurley and NIKE Golf have been included in the overall financial results for the NIKE Brand and for individual geographies, reflecting the operational integration of these businesses into the NIKE Brand category offense. Converse will now be reported as a separate segment, reflecting the ongoing operation of this brand as a stand- alone business.

  • Revenues for NIKE, Inc. increased 8 percent to .0 billion. Changes in foreign currency exchange rates did not have a significant impact on total reported revenue growth.

    • Revenues for the NIKE Brand were .5 billion, up 7 percent on a currency neutral basis, with growth in every product type and every geography except Greater China. For the first quarter, NIKE Brand revenues were higher in Running, Basketball, Football (Soccer) and Men’s Training, offsetting a slight decline in Sportswear.
    • Revenues for Converse were 4 million, up 16 percent on a currency neutral basis, driven by strong performance in our largest owned markets: the United Kingdom, North America and China.
  • Gross margin increased 120 basis points to 44.9 percent. Gross margin benefitted from easing raw material costs, a shift in the mix of the Company’s revenues to higher margin products, lower discounts and growth in the higher margin Direct-to-Consumer business. These benefits were partially offset by higher labor costs and unfavorable changes in foreign exchange rates.
  • Selling and administrative expense was in line with the same period last year at .1 billion. Demand creation expense was 1 million, down 16 percent versus the prior year, which included higher spending supporting key product initiatives, as well as the Olympics and European Football Championships. Operating overhead expense increased 12 percent to .3 billion due to investments in digital innovation and other growth businesses, as well as higher Direct to Consumer costs driven by growth and new store openings.
  • Other expense, net was million, comprised primarily of foreign currency exchange losses. For the quarter, the Company estimates the year-over-year change in foreign currency related gains and losses included in other expense (income), net, combined with the impact of changes in currency exchange rates on the translation of foreign currency-denominated profits, decreased pretax income by approximately million.
  • The effective tax rate was 25.0 percent, compared to 26.9 percent for the same period last year, an improvement due primarily to a lower effective tax rate on operations outside the United States.
  • Net income increased 33 percent to 0 million while diluted earnings per share increased 37 percent to .86, reflecting a 1 percent decline in the weighted average diluted common shares outstanding.

August 31, 2013 Balance Sheet Review for Continuing Operations

  • Inventories for NIKE, Inc. were .5 billion, up 6 percent from August 31, 2012. NIKE Brand wholesale unit inventories increased 8 percent to support future demand. Changes in foreign currency exchange rates and product cost drove approximately a 2 percentage point decline in NIKE, Inc. inventory growth.
  • Cash and short-term investments were .6 billion; .3 billion higher than last year mainly as a result of proceeds from the issuance of debt and sale of the Umbro and Cole Haan businesses in the prior fiscal year, in addition to higher net income and continued focus on working capital productivity.

INVINCIBLE x CONVERSE First String Jack Purcell Johnny

invincible x converse first string jack purcell johnny 01 570x450 INVINCIBLE x CONVERSE First String Jack Purcell Johnny

The result of 3 different leathers and a year-long designing process, this new INVINCIBLE x CONVERSE First String Jack Purcell Johnny is also the first collaboration between CONVERSE’s First String premium sub-brand and a Taiwan-based label. Lavished with premium goat leather, cross stripes of soft Nappa leather on the shoe’s upper helped to form a mosaic appearance. For a distinct contrast, designers added bold leopard pattern leather as heel panel and insole lining, while a zipper ease the put-on, take-off process. Like all other Jack Purcell, white soles and toecaps etched with the Jack Purcell‘s “smiling line” in tonal white serve as one of the collaboration’s signature features. Imprinted with the INVINCIBLE logo on the cup sole’s exterior, the INVINCIBLE x CONVERSE First String Jack Purcell Johnny comes with matching white and black leather laces. Packaged with a tote and shoebox lined with leopard pattern print, the shoe, like all other CONVERSE First String editions, will be part of a limited collection.

In a statement, Jimmy Wu, founder of INVINCIBLE, stated, “I am really proud and excited to be the first brand in Taiwan to work with CONVERSE. From the beginning, we wanted to make a pair of CONVERSE, which represented our style. The Jack Purcell collection, created in 1935 came first to mind. Its independence and the low-profiled luxury concept is synonymous with the philosophy of INVINCIBLE. The “Jack Purcell Johnny” silhouette was launched especially to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the birth of Jack Purcell, and it’s going to fit any style.”

The INVINCIBLE x CONVERSE First String Jack Purcell Johnny will go on sale starting this Saturday, September 28th, through INVINCIBLE’s original flagship store in Taipei City’s trendy East District East Store with a retail price of NT$ 3,680 (or ~5 USD). The collaboration will also be available worldwide on following Friday, October 4th, via boutiques like BODEGA, colette, Dover Street Market, Foot Patrol, Patta, SURRENDER and others.

Air Jordan XX8 Lite “Black/Metallic Gold” – First Look

Air Jordan XX8 Lite Black/Metallic Gold - First Look

If any sneaker would benefit from a “lite” model, it is the Air Jordan XX8. While it is lightweight, the shoe itself has quite a surface area and volume. That being said this new Air Jordan XX8 Lite is a stunning sneaker, especially in this elite-ish colorway; black / metallic gold. A couple big changes that were made when turning this shoe to a Lite involved losing the extra-high top, obviously, and the zipper. Although there have been images on the web of this Lite idea of the XX8 for some months now we are still waiting for a release date an any colorway of the Air Jordan XX8 Lite. Check out these pictures and stay posted here at sneakerfiles for more info on these kicks as it comes out.
