Sneaker Politics Releasing Air Jordan 3 “Katrina” Early at New Orleans Block Party

Ahead of the long desired Air Jordan 3 “Katrina” global release next month on May 12, Louisiana-based retailer Sneaker Politics is debuting the shoe a little early at a block party in the city the shoe was produced to aid.

The party, which will be hosted in collaboration with Jordan Brand, takes place this weekend on April 28 from 11am to 1pm CST. A physical destination has not been disclosed.

The shoe was originally produced back in 2006 after Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast a year earlier. Louisiana, by all accounts, was in the eye of the storm. Jordan Brand auctioned off the Air Jordan 3 “Katrina” to help aid in relief efforts. Thus, this exclusive release in New Orleans with Sneaker Politics is aligned to the shoes original purpose.

Sneaker Politics has stated they will release more details later this week regarding the excitable block party. Stay tuned.

4/28 Join us on 4/28 as we shutdown the street for the first Jordan Brand x Politics block party along with a special Jordan Brand x Politics release. More details to come each day. #JordanBrand #SneakerPolitics

Air Jordan 13 “He Got Game” Celebrates Films 20th Anniversary with Retro

Spike Lee’s time-honored film, He Got Game, officially opened in theaters on May 1, 1998. On the eve of its 20th anniversary, screenings for the picture are taking place this week in Los Angeles at the famed TCL Chinese Theatre and, of course, in Lee’s Fort Greene neighborhood at the BAM Rose Cinema.

Not all films celebrate their 20-year marker. But not every film is He Got Game.

Lee, through his work with Denzel Washington, Rosario Dawson, Ray Allen and others, was able to tap into basketball in a way that no one before him had. Not only did the film capture the essence of the game and its history in New York City, but its relationship to families, teammates, and the games ability to serve as an outlet or a bridge for anyone it touches.

The culture around the game was uniquely fresh through Lee’s lens. Although Kobe Bryant was his initial choice to play Jesus Shuttlesworth, Ray Allen, who starred in the film and is rumored to return for a potential sequel, was far better suited for the role. Basketball is a game based largely in skill but also in mechanics. Very few players have better mechanics than Ray Allen. His jump, squared shoulders, 10-and-2 hand posture on the ball, and his graceful follow through proved to be the most cinematic adoration of the film — even when set against the subtle beauty of Coney Island in the late ’90s.

Then there were the sneakers.

Jordan Brand has just released the Air Jordan 13 in 1997. The White/Black-Varsity OG worn by Washington’s character, Jake Shuttlesworth, stands as the only Air Jordan 13 to release in ’97 — all other original pairs debuted at retailers the following year. In the film, Jake, just a few days removed from prison, makes a point to go purchase a new pair of basketball sneakers. He bounces into his local sneaker shop and is handed the “new Jordans” because, at the time, the 13’s were great ball shoes.

A legend was birthed in that moment. The shoes would forever after be deemed the Air Jordan 13 “He Got Game” and linked to Lee and his film. Later this year the shoe will return in celebration of the aforementioned 20th anniversary. And, like those bi-coastal screenings later this week, the latest “He Got Game” retro this August rekindles the magic Spike channeled on the silver screen decades ago.

Air Jordan 1 “Clay Green” and “Blue Moon” Release Dates Changed

After initial reports indicated that the entire Air Jordan 1 “Best Hand in the Game” pack would release regionally on May 5, at least two styles from the collection will debut at an earlier time.

Both the Air Jordan 1 “Clay Green” and Air Jordan 1 “Blue Moon” are now expected to release on May 1 through Nike SNKRS. This combats earlier information that the pack would also release regionally in select markets.

Select retailers and sneaker boutiques could still release the pairs on the intended May 5 release date. But if you’re hoping to secure a pair on SNKRS, you’ll want to plan for May 1. Each pair is priced at 0 and will release on the morning of May 1 at 10am EDT.

Here’s the Story Behind the Air Jordan 1 ‘Homage to Home’

Air Jordan 1 Homage to Home From Chicago for Chicago

Jordan Brand will release the Air Jordan 1 Chicago Homage to Home tomorrow, April 21st at select retailers in the Chicago area.

Following a wider release of this Air Jordan 1 will release on May 19th, however it will be different from the ‘Chicago’ by lacking ‘From’ or ‘For’ text on the heels. Retail price for both is 0.

In celebration of the release, Nike SNKRS gives us the back story behind the design which you can read below.

Air Jordan 1 Homage to Home From Chicago for Chicago

The promise that was Air Jordan—from the chance Nike took on a 21-year-old guard from North Carolina, to the ball and wings logo first sketched on a napkin, to the louder-than-a-bomb black and red shoes and apparel that featured it—all came together on the weekend of February 10, 1985 at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis, Indiana. All of the hard work, all of the risks taken, this was the first real opportunity for everyone involved to catch their breath and celebrate. Well, Michael Jordan didn’t get to rest. That weekend was All-Star Weekend, Jordan’s first, where he’d represent Chicago in the Slam Dunk Contest as a contestant and in Sunday’s All-Star Game as a starter. He’d do so in his signature Air Jordans (and, in the case of the Dunk Contest, the matching apparel), and make a very un-rookielike splash. The actual retail release was still a few months off, but this would be a chance for would-be consumers to get their best look yet at what was coming.

Air Jordan 1 Banned

On Saturday, Jordan came out in the league-banned original red-and-black version of the Air Jordan, complete with matching red-and-black nylon tracksuit, red laces laced up to the second-to-last eyelet, something that over the years would become a standard Jordan touch. He went through the warmups and the first round in his Air Jordan gear, gold chains bouncing around his neck, only revealing his script Chicago red road uniform for the semifinals—where he’d post the round’s only perfect 50 with a dunk from the free-throw line—and finals. He would go on to finish second.

Air Jordan 1 Chicago

In Sunday’s All-Star game, Jordan laced up the “Chicago” red-black-and-white Air Jordan, in standard red toe form rather than the earlier “black toe” version he’d hung over his shoulder in official photos and worn earlier in the season. He’d score just seven points in the game—it’s long been said he was the victim of a freeze-out orchestrated by veterans—but Jordan still stood out in a way the other All-Stars didn’t. Still a week away from his 22nd birthday, Jordan represented the future. And it wasn’t just the shoes. The original Air Jordan was released in a multitude of colorways back in 1985, and since then it has been reissued in even more. If you laid them all out toe-to-heel, they’d stretch a long, long way. But if you distill the whole collection down to the most important ones worn by Jordan himself, it comes down to just two—the black/red and black/white/red, with an honorable mention to the “black toe” rendition. The colors Jordan had once called “the devil’s colors,” in reference to an in-state college rival, had become his signature look.

Homage to Home Air Jordan 1

Yes, Jordan wore other Air Jordans, including the black/royal in a now infamous poster shoot on a Portland runway. But the black/red and white/black/red were the only varieties he wore on the league floor—and that weekend of February 10th in 1985 marked the only time he wore both. To celebrate these original Bulls colorways, Jordan introduces for the first time the “Homage to Home” Air Jordan 1, a down-the-middle joining of the black/red and black/red/white Air Jordan 1s. Unlike Mike, you can represent both colorways at once. And the league can’t do anything to stop you.

Chris Paul Discusses His New Jordan CP3.11 & PJ Tucker’s Insane Collection

words & interview // Nick DePaula:

When a superstar athlete finds something that works on the floor, it can be hard to get them to switch things up.

That’s been the case for Chris Paul and his longtime Jordan Brand signature series. Every shoe has been a beast on the hardwood to hoop in, and CP3 has loved every last element of the line’s performance. From the 5/8th collar height, to the wrapping forefoot grip along the inner toe, the no-frills traction setup and forefoot Zoom Air — there’s been a formula in place that simply worked.

The footwear has helped fuel him all this time in the Association, and after nine All-Star nods and nine All-Defensive team namings, Paul was finally looking to shift things up, even if ever so slightly. The newest addition to his signature series — he’s only the 6th athlete to have 10+ consecutive signature models — looks to take all of the best cues and touches of his sneakers to date, while adding even more support and control.

Partly inspired by a cult classic-slash-point guard’s favorite from over  a decade ago — the Nike Air Jet Flight — Paul looked to add a lockdown strap to his eleventh signature model, harnessing his every step through what he’s hoping will be a deep postseason run here this spring.

We recently caught up with CP3 to hear all about his latest shoe, his first season in Houston, and of course, some of his favorite sneakers off the court. Check out the full conversation below, and let us know your thoughts on his new Jordan CP3.11 on Twitter.

Nick DePaula: The CP3.11 — crazy to say to we’re on the 11 now — what were some of the biggest things you were looking for on the design to switch it up this time around?

Chris Paul: The thing that I was most excited about was the strap. For years, and awhile ago on the 3s, I wanted a strap on my shoe, but we couldn’t do it at the time. I’m excited about the strap, and I’m excited about the “rocket fuel” energy shoe that we dropped. I’m sure you know a lot about sneakers, how different things work and how far in advance you have to do it. Pushing the release date back on my shoe actually worked out perfect, in that me being traded, it would’ve sucked coming out with a shoe in Clippers colors. You know what I mean? [laughs]

NDP: That definitely would’ve been awkward. [laughs] But, you guys have to work over a year in advance usually, so that’s part of the process. What’s it like being one of only two players with his own Jordan signature shoe now?

CP: It’s such an honor and a privilege. We all know what the brand stands for – it stands for excellence. For me, I love sneakers and the whole process of it. The thing that I’ve enjoyed over the years learning and trying to get better at is telling stories. When you design anything, it’s all about telling your story. That’s why the brand is what it is. That’s why MJ is who he is. When you think about the 1s and the “Banned” story, the 3s and the 11s, all of those different shoes tell different stories.

NDP: Definitely, and from JMay back in the day to Justin Taylor now, how has the process of working on your shoe changed over the years? How many times do you meet in person, and do you guys do FaceTime, texts or emails too now?

CP: It’s constant. Not only with JT, but with Jamaal Lucas at the brand too. My brother is also always involved, and it’s so collaborative. Obviously FaceTime helps, but they come down and see me too. They always come down during the summer when I have my youth camp, and they’ll show the kids what we’re working on. I’ll see those guys when I go to Portland, and then we’ll group talk year around. It’s not just a one time thing. That’s what’s cool about it. We can always think about the process of it and because we have that relationship – we can be honest about what we like or don’t like.

NDP: That’s great to hear. I know you guys have all gotten super close, and I remember Jamaal was joking about how you had pulled up to one of his Portland city league games to watch, and he felt like he had a little bit of extra pressure.

CP: Definitely! [laughs] That’s the thing with being with the brand. It’s like a real family, and it’s bigger than just the shoes.

NDP: Tell me about the Adjust Force and Jet Flight inspiration, which I found super interesting. What was it about some of those older shoes that helped to shape the 11 here?

CP: I’m sitting here laughing, because a lot of people don’t know about the Jet Flight. I was in high school, and I used to wear those shoes. I remember going on Eastbay, and they were like .99 at one point, and I was trying to get every color. They were just so lightweight, and I loved that shoe. Steve Nash wore ’em for a long time, and Luke Ridnour wore that shoe too.

NDP: In LA with the Clippers you of course had Blake [Griffin] also with Jordan — now in Houston, you got James with his huge Adidas deal. Do you and James ever get into any Jumpman vs. Three Stripes arguments or debates?

CP: He’ll come in with some pair of Adidas and I might have some Js on, and he’ll mess with me and say, “Ughhh!” [laughs] The cool part too is we both got AAU programs, and of course with grassroots basketball, there’s different circuits. You’ve got the Nike / Jordan circuit, you’ve got the Adidas circuit and you’ve got the Under Armour circuit. One thing we’ve talked about is getting our teams together to play against eachother.

Chris Paul & PJ Tucker’s insane locker room stash, which is constantly .

NDP: Another teammate of yours that’s been wearing crazy sneakers all year is of course PJ Tucker. He said he even caught Michael by surprise in Charlotte when he wore a pair of Shawn Marion 5 PEs. Which pairs has PJ worn that grabbed your attention?

CP: It catches me by surprise with some of the shoes that he’ll play in. I don’t ever really get surprised by seeing that he got a shoe. He has guys’ PEs and has a crazy collection of Brons and a crazy collection of Jordans. He’ll be in some shoes, and it’s like, “You done lost your mind.” [laughs] You know the sole is coming off those – why are you even trying? [laughs]

NDP: PJ told a story about how he tracked down and bought a pair of the navy suede Jeter 11s, which are super rare of course. And then he said you casually wore your own pair into the locker room a few days later. What are some PEs you’ve got that you’ve been most excited about lately?

CP: I’m a big fan of the 11s. I love the 4s, the 3s and the Jordan 1 is my favorite of all time. I just love the 1. A shoe that I think is slept on a lot is the 23s. Not only the design, but I actually played in those in the ’08 Olympics. The story behind the 23, and a lot of people forget about MJ’s thumbprint that’s behind the tongue. Every time you pull the tongue up, you feel like you’re MJ for a second. That’s the stuff that I pay attention to.

NDP: That was one of my favorite Jordans to play in for sure, with the full-length Zoom on top of the IPS, and then the support was great. I remember you had some really clean PEs when you were on the Hornets, with the teal.

CP: Yeah!

NDP: That’ll be a fun one to bring back when they decide to. Do you have anything special planned for the CP3 11 for the playoffs?

CP: I got some fun ones coming out around the playoffs and through the summer. A few shoes paying homage to some of my favorite TV shows and stuff like that. I probably can’t tell you everything, but we got some fun stuff coming.

NDP: Outside of your own line, what’s your favorite Air Jordan sneaker of all time from when you were growing up? Is it still the 13?

CP: The 13 is one of my favorite shoes because of the story behind it. When I was in the 6th grade, I was playing after school intramurals, and I came back to my locker and my shoes were gone. That was the first day that I wore them to school — and I didn’t get another pair of 13s until my fourth year in the NBA. [laughs]

NDP: What sneakers are in your current rotation off the court?

CP: I love the new Jordan Trainer Flyknit, with the strap. I love anything with Flyknit just to wear around. The 11 Lows, I wear those some. The Kaws 4s. Depending on where I’m going, I wear 1s. If I’m going to dinner, I’ll wear 1s. That’s probably the model I have most — I got 1s for days. [laughs]

NDP: Last question for you man — what are some upcoming launches that you’re most excited about?

CP: You tell me first —

NDP: Well, I think a lot of people are looking forward to what more the brand does with Virgil here after the 1s launched, and I’m also looking forward to seeing what you guys are able to do with Don C.

CP: Man, me too, and Don’s got a few sick ones coming out! When you’re over on the fourth floor of the MJ Building on campus, man, he’s got some sick colorways of that shoe!

Air Jordan 1 “Six Rings” Anchors “Best Hand in the Game” Pack

The much-anticipated Air Jordan 1 “Six Rings” would certainly seem to be the centerpiece of Jordan Brand’s upcoming “Best Hand in the Game” pack. If not, it’s certainly the accomplishment for which all others in Jordan’s career orbit.

Taking its easily recognizable palette from the Jordan 6 Rings silhouette, MJ’s winning mentality is represented through a six-of-a-kind hand on the right insole that plays up the cards theme.

Like all others from the “Best Hand in the Game” pack, the “Six Rings” 1’s will release on May 5 in a specific region that Jordan Brand has not yet detailed. Stay tuned.
