Travis Scott x Air Jordan 4 “Purple Suede” // Closer Look

Photos by Gabe Oshin for Nice Kicks

Last Friday, Houston, Texas saw one of the best basketball/footwear events in recent memory. The Travis Scott x Jordan Brand Carnival was both on-brand and entertaining. Playing off IRL experiences dating back to Rodeo and leading up to Astroworld, the carnival theme was the perfect middle ground as fans shot hoops for prizes, lined up for early access to the Travis Scott x Air Jordan 4 “Cactus Jack” collab and even had the chance to ride a matching Ferris wheel.

Not only was the surprise event appropriately in Travis’ home of Houston, Jordan Brand proved nimble in the lifestyle space while staying true to hoops roots with local Pro-Am talent playing on a Cactus Jack painted court in themed jerseys and the recently released Jordan CP3.XI.

Despite getting shut down due to an incredibly excited crowd rushing in to see their local legend in person, it was fellow Houston heavy-hitter Chase B who truly shut it down as far as footwear goes.

Rocking the coveted Travis Scott x Air Jordan 4 “Purple Suede” — nickname pending — at the blue shoe’s launch event, the DJ for La Flame gave the local Houston crowd and the world the first good look at the shoe.

Previously only seen courtside on Travis next to the likes of Kylie Jenner and Hakeem Olajuwon, Chase shot around prior to the Pro-Am run in what appears to be the next in line of three Travis Scott x Air Jordan 4 collaborations. Also of note, My 5 alum and Cactus Jack artist Sheck Wes was in the house rocking the “Dark Grey” Travis Scott x Air Jordan 4s at the event.

For the best look yet at the Travis Scott x Air Jordan 4 “Purple Suede,” peep the shots on Chase below.

Kevin Durant’s New Nike KD 11 Debuts New Look + New Tech

words // Nick DePaula:

KD just wants to hoop.

Once he began working on his eleventh Nike signature shoe with his longtime designer Leo Chang shortly after joining the Golden State Warriors, the early premise was simple. Kevin was looking for a clean, cozy and easy sneaker he could take straight to the hardwood, with no break-in period and ample cushioning.

As we’ve seen through the years, Durant will often wear just a handful of pairs throughout the course of a season, meaning he needs a resilient cushioning setup to last him throughout the year. Nike’s solution was the first dual React and Zoom Air cushioning setup.

The tech is all under the hood, as the React foam midsole is housed in a clear rubber cupsole, with a full-length Zoom Air unit embedded under the sockliner.

This can all be confirmed in plain sight, according to the midfoot text on the outsole…

KDXI Cushioning System:
Full Length Nike Zoom Air
Nike React Midsole Foam

The shoe’s silhouette also shifts from model’s past, as the 11 features more of a chukka height, in a more casual-friendly knit construction inspired by some of KD’s favorite off-court Nike runners. He’s known to show up to games in Flyknit sneakers and Tech Fleece track suit, often opting for a laid back look, while his peers take their pre-game fashions more seriously.

“He likes the feel of the Flyknit Trainer and the Nike Epic React,” says Chang. “Last summer, he loved the Air Sock Racer — that is where the collar of the 11 came from, and all the lofting in the tongue and quarter followed.”

To kick things off, Nike will have a “Paranoid” colorway for Durant to rock with his Warriors uni, alluding to the fact that he’s paranoid about people taking his spot as one of the world’s greatest players. A simple black and white edition will also be launched, playing off his “Still KD” mantra and easygoing lifestyle.

Look for the Nike KD 11 to hit stores in June.

A First Look at the New PlayStation x Nike Air Force 1

Image via: @drewleague

Image via: @drewleague

Last week, Nike took a trip down memory lane to examine the origins of the “PlayStation” Air Force 1. Sure, the retrospective was informative, but it was also made to set the table for a sequel, which has recently surfaced online. This year’s model sports a matte black leather upper, complemented with tonal patent leather paneling and a puffy jewel Swoosh. The same iridescent effect on the Swoosh is repeated on the shoe’s heel panels, both of which are adorned with PlayStation branding. We’re waiting on release details, but it’s rumored that the launch could occur soon, coinciding with this week’s E3 conference.

IKEA Offers a First Look at Its MARKERAD Collaboration With Virgil Abloh

Image via: IKEA

At its annual Democratic Design Days event, IKEA previewed pieces from the brand’s upcoming MARKERAD collection with Virgil Abloh. “Given how tremendous this opportunity is,” says the acclaimed designer, “I’m not content to just make another chair.” Instead, Abloh’s take on the home furnishing staple has a triangular red doorstop supporting the base of one of the legs, an “interruption” that elevates the “anonymous, everyday icons that we use without noticing.” Along with the doorstop, IKEA previewed a glass cabinet, encased in a wooden frame with transparent glass panels and a red handle in the shape of a nail, and a rug that’s essentially a giant IKEA receipt.

The MARKERAD collection will hit IKEA stores in 2019.

A Detailed Look at the OFF WHITE x Nike Presto “White”

Although official release details have not yet been announced, it’s reported that Virgil Abloh’s OFF WHITE x Nike Presto “Polar Opposites” Pack will release sometime this month. Ahead of anything official, a closer look at one half of the pack has been vindicated today.

The clean, summer-friendly white pair appears to be the current favorite of the two. With respect to its counterpart in black, this lightly hued and widely breathable pair simply feels more appropriate for the season ahead. With subtle red stitching at the tongue to match the famed zipcord, Cone colored branding marks the paneling while “AIR” in black finishes the heel strap.

Several reports place the OFF WHITE x Nike Presto “White” on June 21. Yet no confirmations to that end have been announced. Stay tuned for more details

BRONX NEWS: History of the Belmont: On the 150th anniversary of the Stakes, we look back through the years

This weekend, they’ll race the Belmont Stakes for the 150th time and after all these years, the actual stakes remain high with yet another horse, Justify, arriving in Elmont with Triple Crown dreams. That’s the essence of Belmont lore, the longest and oldest of the racing majors, the final, finicky leg of the Triple Crown that’s coronated racing kings the likes of Whirlaway, Citation, Secretariat and Affirmed, but with even more frequency, Belmont’s mammoth, sandy track has swallowed the stalled bids of so many other would-be champions.

A Closer Look at the Off-White x Converse Chuck 70

words by @mrsteriyaki images by @mymategym

In a short time following the Off-White x Converse Chuck 70 releasing, images of another all-white colourway surfaced online.

So I thought, for the folks that missed out on getting the first pair in hand and are waiting for the next to drop, let’s take a closer look at “The Ten” latecomer.

I’d had it in my mind to rock these with shorts and high white socks; shout out LA, so I wasted no time between purchasing and getting these on foot. The sun doesn’t come around too often this side of the pond.

The lateral and medial sides of the shoe are 80% transparent, meaning your socks set the vibe and tell most of the story when you wear them. Those panels are made from a very thin, completely breathable, plastic netting I want to say. It’s the same material used on some of the other models from “The Ten” but without any of the reinforcement of the foam. It’s actually quite an impressive component of the shoe, as I know some people were concerned about condensation forming due to all the rubber and plastic.

In true Converse style, this iteration by Virgil is quite rigid and comfort is not its strong point. But that being said, it’s frozen-like state is an aspect that I really enjoy – it keeps the outline clean and doesn’t lose its high top shape. To me, the One Star brand has always built shoes we can enjoy by wearing them into the ground, and I’m not approaching this one any different.

It’s rumoured that the delay of this release from the original “Ten” was due to manufacturing issues and questions around the durability of the plastic netting material discussed earlier. Whether any of that is true or not, I think the Converse Chuck 70 deserved its own separate release from “The Ten” we saw late last year. Although acquired by the Swoosh 15 years ago, I think the Converse works well outside its predecessor’s collection. It definitely acts as an effective catalyst for the future of Off-White x Nike releases.

To illustrate my intentions and the shoe’s capabilities, I had a slightly wild idea for a video review. Enjoy below and please leave a thought or two in the comments.

Peace.

John Elliott x Nike LeBron Icon // Closer Look

Calling an audible but perhaps not unexpected, King James is elevating and revamping his retro line before it truly takes form via the John Elliott x Nike LeBron Icon.

Donning DNA from the LeBron 8, said to be Elliot’s favorite LeBron model, a closer look at the White/Black colorway sheds new light on the construction.

Top to bottom, the shoe features a leather tongue with inverted branding. From there, a myriad of overlays make the model more interesting but perhaps cause confusion — not necessarily in a bad way, though. A fused upper results in a rounded but still sharp shape, set off the most by sewn overlays on the heel and toe box. Lastly, a full-length Air Max unit and translucent outsole cap off the kicks.

See them on the feet of Nike Basketball’s Tim Day below. To see how LeBron rocked his new shoe, click here. To see how John Elliott wore them, click here.

Take a Look Inside Footpatrol’s New Paris Store

Image via: Footpatrol

Image via: Footpatrol

Last Saturday on May 19th, Footpatrol opened its new store in Paris’ historic Le Marais district. Occupying a 470 sq ft space at 45 Rue du Temple, the sneaker boutique is designed by the London-based architectural design studio Counterfeit Studio. The new location updates Footpatrol’s original London home with a blend of muted earth tones, seen on the exposed brick walls and various fiberglass fixtures. There’s also a suspended galvanized steel-fin ceiling — an homage to the pitched roof
of the London store — and the infamous Footpatrol Gas Mask logo, recreated in white neon and surrounded by an infinity mirror.

Be sure to check it out if you’re in the area.

A First Look at the adidas Harden LS 2 Buckle

Although James Harden has won the Western Conference title before, years ago with the Oklahoma City Thunder, this year’s opportunity to champion the west is vastly different. He’s now a superstar of his own team and likely the leagues MVP, leading the Rockets against the dominating Golden State Warriors and his former teammate, Kevin Durant.

With the series tied 2-2 and Game 5 in Houston tonight, Harden is gearing up for the biggest moment of his career thus far. In doing so, he’ll lace up his second signature silhouette — the adidas Harden Vol. 2. But when the season ends, whatever form that takes for Harden, the Beard will have a budding lifestyle variation of his signature shoe to canvas the summer.

The adidas Harden LS 2 Buckle stands as the second iteration of his Harden LS series. It’s most noteworthy feature are criss-cross straps that lay overtop the smooth mixed material upper. A juxtaposition of tumbled leather and suede give the LS 2 Buckle a premium aesthetic, while full-length Boost midsole tooling below ensure comfort is also at its height.

A more traditional form of leather marks the heel of the striking new style while its outsole appears in a rigid textile with tiny grooves for proper traction. The adidas Harden LS 2 Buckle is set to debut in black/white and olive-green colorways. Expect the release on May 28 at select three stripes retailers.

An On Foot Look At The Newest Under Armour Curry 5

words // Nick DePaula:

When Stephen Curry requested a lighter and lower look for his next signature shoe, still featuring the same “sleek and fast” approach that made the Curry 4 a much-loved model and a championship-proven performer, his team of designers knew the request would take them to a new place.

“Steph is great and has really become part-design thinking and heavily function thinking as well,” says Dave Dombrow, UA’s Chief Design Officer. “With this one specifically, he was thinking about weight and how do we get lighter. He was also thinking about how do we possibly get lower.”

Highlighted by a knit collar sleeve and molded Anafoam support piece around the toe and heel, the newest addition to the Warriors’ sharpshooter’s signature editions introduces an entirely new silhouette for his line.

Working on-court for his sudden shifts and bursts to the basket, or off-court for everyday life, you can check out the latest colorway of Curry’s fifth sneaker, showcased in the “Welcome Home” theme, below in detail.

The Under Armour Curry 5 “Welcome Home” is available now on UA.com. For more on the design process of the shoe, be sure to check out our full Q&A with Under Armour’s Dave Dombrow.
