Nike Air Force High // Throwback Thursday

Big socks not included.

Welcome to today’s Nice Kicks’ Throwback Thursday, where we once again reminisce, remember, and pay tribute to another ’90s basketball gem, a silhouette that has yet to receive a proper retro from Nike: the 1993 Nike Air Force High.

Everything seemed bigger and bolder in the ’90s: more Air, longer shorts, darker socks, and high-top basketball sneakers which rival the Burj Khalifa in terms of height, appearance, and presence.

One particular early ’90s statement piece which surprisingly has not received its proper due is the 1993 Nike Air Force High. A cousin of the 1993 Nike Air Sheer Force, the Air Force High is a highly aggressive, rugged, and sturdy model, able to withstand the tough, physical game characteristic of ’90s basketball.

With an aesthetically pleasing design, the Air Force incorporated the most advanced sneaker technology of its time including a Dynamic-fit inner sleeve made of neoprene, high quality leather upper, and interlocking straps — the latter design attribute which was also seen on the Air Jordan 8, Air Force Max CB, and Air Raid.

What further defines the Air Force is its strong on court presence, worn by a multitude of players at both college and NBA levels including guards Mark Price and John Stockton, and big men Charles Oakley, David Robinson, and Alonzo Mourning.

Also of note, Horace Grant of the Chicago Bulls and Richard Dumas of the Phoenix Suns wore the Air Force High throughout the 1993 NBA Finals. Additionally, Donyell Marshall of UConn and Jalen Rose of Michigan wore the Air Force during their collegiate careers as well, illustrating the versatility and popularity of the shoe across multiple levels.

Many colorways were released including black/white-lapis, white/black, white/kelly green, white/fire red, and white/black-black orchid which allowed the Air Force to be a fully customizable team sneaker.

In 1993, Nike created a comic series which featured several prominent basketball models including the Nike Air Bound, Air Force Max, Dynamic Flight, and the Air Force High, the latter which featured Alonzo Mourning and David Robinson sporting the Air Force in both mid and high versions, respectively, forever capturing the true aggressiveness and durability of the sneaker as the footwear of choice in a sport of legends and giants.

The 1993 Nike Air Force High: a memorable, timeless classic, whose legacy and presence has withstood the test of time.

Nike is Releasing “Hoyas” Air More Uptempo’s This Summer

Now in their first full season with Patrick Ewing at the helm, after leading the team to national prominence and a title to match back in 1984, a new Georgetown Hoyas era has begun and it’s the most exciting in years. Nike is banking on said notion with the forthcoming release of the Nike Air More Uptempo “Hoyas” this summer. Nike Reveals Air Max Day 2018 Lineup

For retro loyalists, Nike’s Air Max Day is practically a national holiday, and 2018 offers nothing short of a stacked lineup. The Swoosh makes a point of featuring cult classics from the vaunted Air Max line, each displaying a visibly pioneering trait.

First up is the Air Max 180 from 1991, built with a 180 Max Air unit that offers, as the name suggests, 180 degrees of visible air, enabling direct contact between the cushioning element and the pavement. Expect the OG Ultramarine colorway to be available on February 2nd.

Two years later, Tinker Hatfield bested 180 degrees with the launch of the Air Max 93, featuring the large, rounded heel unit of the Air Max 93, internally referred to as the 270, denoting 270 degrees of exposed air. The Air Max 93 releases February 2nd.

The Nike VaporMax Plus combines two iconic silhouettes, the Tn and VaporMax, resulting in a hybrid model that fuses one of the Air Max line’s most innovative uppers with the line’s most daring Max Air unit. The shoe, featuring a new moldable mesh articulation, mounted on a VaporMax Air-Sole, is available today in limited quantities on SNKRS. A full release follows January 25th.

Rounding out the range is the Air Max 270, the first Air Max model designed for lifestyle. The highly anticipated shoe features a 32mm heel bag, making it the tallest yet, with a super-soft bounce for all-day comfort. The first drop will be available February 1st, and new colorways of the Air Max 270 will be available beginning March 2nd.

Additionally, the Nike Air VaporMax 97, Nike VaporMax Flyknit 2.0 and Air Max 1/97 Vote Forward SW will also release during the lead up to Air Max Day.

Nike Air Max Day 2018 Lineup

Somehow turning into the Coachella of sneakers, Nike Air Max Day is very much a thing and it appears 2018‘s installment will be very much of an event on this shoe holiday turned retail rendezvous.

From can’t miss collabs to vault favorites, there’s a lot dropping on March 26, 2018 and on the dates leading up.

While it’s been known for months that the Sean Wotherspoon x Nike Air Max 97/1 Hybrid will launch in much greater availability on Air Max Day, their will be many an OG and new pair joining them on said date and on the days leading up.

Nike Air Max 180 “Ultramarine”
Nike Air Max 93 Menthol
Nike Air Max 93 “Menthol”

Leading off the retro part of the campaign is the Nike Air Max 180 in its beloved “Ultramarine” colorway. The shoe has been seen in bringback form many times, most notably as part of 2005/2006’s History of Air Campaign. In addition, the Nike Air Max 93 in its famed “Menthol” makeup will return. Both shoes drop ahead of Air Max Day 2018, releasing on February 2nd.

Nike Air VaporMax 97

Bridging the gap between old and new, the Nike Air Max 97 “Neon” is launching with VaporMax tooling. This appears to be a push for 2018 as an Air Max 95 of the same styling was previewed recently. This shoe will land on Air Max Day with a March 26th release date.

Nike Air VaporMax Plus

Also merging old and new, the Nike Air VaporMax Plus will launch in a retro referencing “Hyper Blue” take alongside this month’s “Triple Black” introduction. A quickstrike drop for the VaporMax Plus just happened on SNKRS with the official launch taking place on January 25th.

Nike Air VaporMax Flyknit 2.0

Keeping with the new tech, the Nike Air VaporMax 2.0 will also appear in an edgy Black/Teal-Hot Punch variation. Look for these to launch on Air Max Day, March 26.

Nike Air Max 270 Light Bone/Hot Punch

Closing out the festivities and positioned as the headliner, the Nike Air Max 270 will drop in a Light Bone/Hot Punch colorway reminiscent of early Air Maxes from the advent of the tech. As disclosed in an unboxing breakdown from our own Ray P., this shoe is the first all-new Air Max designed strictly for lifestyle wear, taking inspiration from the Air Max 180 and Air Max 93, respectively. Check out detailed shots here and an unboxing video here. The Air Max 270 hits retailers on February 1st with more colorways hitting on March 2nd.
