Kicks On Court: Kobe Unwraps “Christmas” Shoes & Nick Young Revisits LeBron’s “First Game”

The Staples Center in Los Angeles is an extremely busy arena right now. In addition to hosting back-to-back games in the Lakers vs. Thunder series, the world-class arena is also in the midst of hosting back-to-back games in the Clippers vs. Spurs series and playoff games for the Kings, Los Angeles’ professional hockey team. Additionally, Staples is the center of attention in our Kicks On Court column today. In the first matchup there yesterday, we spotted Nick Young in the “First Game” Nike Air Zoom Generation. If you recall, this was the very shoe LeBron James played his first NBA game in back in October of 2003, hence the nickname of this shoe. In the second bout, the Black Mamba celebrated Christmas in May by rocking the “Christmas/Cheetah” Kobe VIIs in a loss to the Thunder. You may remember Kobe bringing these out during the first game of the 2011-2012 NBA season on Christmas Day. Nick Young and Kobe Bryant shared the spotlight today, but who rocked the best shoes on court between the two? Let us know in the voting poll below.

Cole Haan x Nike x Tom Sachs ‘Mission Control’ Shoes

cole haan nike tom sachs mission control shoes 1 Cole Haan x Nike x Tom Sachs Mission Control Shoes

Before everyone asks; no these Nike/Cole Haan/Tom Sachs beauties will not be for sale. Made specially for the Tom Sachs ‘Space Program: Mars’ exhibition currently going on at the Armory in NYC, they are part of the official uniform for the “crew” working the “mission”. Overall the shoe is somewhat reminiscent of golfing footwear, with a waffled sole, perforated leather upper, & subtle Nike swoosh. Still, if any of these hit the market they’re sure to start a bidding war among collectors.

Heather Grey Wall x Mark McNairy Long Wing Tip Shoes

Heather Grey Wall x Mark McNairy Long Wing Tip Shoes

Certainly no stranger to one another, American designer Mark McNairy and Kazuki Kuraishi from Heather Grey Wall get together to present a pair of Long Wing Tip Shoes. This isn’t the first time this year that the two have worked together; in January they released a Work Tailored Jacket and a pair of Cargo Pants that stood at the intersection of fashion forward and semi-formal, which is a balance McNairy continued with his Saddle Shoe releases earlier this month. These Wing Tips are built mostly out of premium dark grey suede material with contrasting wool inlays producing a design that truly reflects McNairy’s ability to breathe new life into classic silhouettes. A contrasting white Vibram sole attached using a Goodyear Welt technique, tonal laces, and a leather liner round off the look. These are available now at Heather Grey Wall’s shop. via: Eyescream

Kickstarter: The Shoes That Got Us Hooked

As sneakerheads, the sizes of our individual collections may vary, but each of us can remember that one shoe that started our obsession with kicks. In order to highlight these symbolic shoes, we asked Nice Kicks readers on our Facebook page and members of our staff to tell us what sneaker kicked off their obsession. Be sure to share which pair got you hooked and why in the comments below.

Ian Stonebrook

The Reebok Shaqnosis made me a sneakerhead. Back in the summer of ’96, I was visiting family in Indiana and I was only one year removed from falling in love with basketball. I’d been rocking Olajuwon kicks before, but I really wanted to catch up be like my big cousin who was a Shaq fan. During that Crawfordsville stay, my mom and sister returned from a shopping trip with a blue sneaker box. My sister played it off like they were for her, but I knew they were all mine. I rocked them the first day of third grade and have been hooked ever since.
